RE: New Rifle for Beginner
I started hunting deer at 23 and purchased a Ruger 30-06. The recoil was fine. However, with the advancement of technology, I would purchase a 300 Winchester Short Mag in a Browning A-bolt or Winchester 70 with BOSS. The combination of the short Mag and the BOSS will reduce recoil to the level of the 30-06 with a heck of a lot more punch if needed for elk. With a lighter load for whitetail, you could be in the 308 recoil level. The best thing about the 300 is you have a rifle with a huge range of powder choices that allow you handle every type of game in the lower 48 States.
