I once shot a deer at 200 yards with a 80gr bullet out of a 250 savage, just behind shoulder. I didn't get any meat from the whole front end of that deer.

I HAVE A 257 WBY. SS VANGUARD. WITH 120 GR. NOSLERS FACTORY, I GET AROUND 3,300 FPS CHRONOGRAPHED WITH 3 SHOTS 1 RAGGED HOLE AT 100 YDS. 87 GR. BULLETS UP TO THE 120 GR. WILL COVER ME FOR VARMINTS UP TO ELK. I FEEL THIS IS THE PERFECT ALL AROUND RIFLE FOR ME, RECOIL IS JUST RIGHT. ROY WEATHERBY'S FAVORITE AND MINE TOO! AND A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE ALSO! THATS JUST MY OPINION.

hmm, i own a mosin-nagant... that would be a good first rifle.. i live in washington state, and the nagant is perfect here. i only paid $75 for it at big 5, the 7.62x54mm R is more powerfull than the 30-06, [but not by much], the ammo costs less too if youre not set up for reloading. now if you want something even more powerfull then i suggest an enfield number 4 mark 1 [.303 british] which is is good for anything in north america... a k31 swiss carbine is a really accurate rifle so its another one to consider , im just not sure how it is for elk or moose.

Isn't that a Russian round? 7.62x54? I could be wrong but I have a 7.62x54 Russian. The 7.62x54R is about equal to the 30-06. I have one made for the Russians by Sako.

#1 rule, don't buy more rifle than you need (ie. if your furthest shot is 150 yards, you don't need a .338).
buy a rifle that your comfortable shooting with. if you buy a large caliber rifle and are scared of the recoil your shot placement will not be satisfactory. remember, large calibers are not the answer for poor shooting.
