I like the .308 the best. I like the stiffer shorter action. (On my bolt guns)

This is just my preference though.

Asking this question is like asking us what truck we prefer. Ford, Chevy or Dodge

You'll always get a ton of different answers and none of them may be wrong.

I also like the .308,it is shell is shorter, making for a shorter pump &less chance of a hang up.also a very large selection of ammo from varmit rounds to"light mag " rounds.

I'd opt for the .30-06 in a bolt action such as the Winchester model 70. Then top it with a nice low powered variable scope like the Zeiss Conquest or Leupold VX-II 3-9x40.

I hunt with a Remington 7600 pump in chambered for 270. I swear that this is the best all around gun on the market. It is great in the woods, open fields and everywhere in between. I have taken woodchucksat 300 yards with this rifle and many deer atranges upto 250 yards. If I know thatI am going to hunt open fields all day I will take a 243 or 300 RUMAG bolt action. No matter where I am huntingthe 7600 is always with me. I like the 270 so much I am think about buying a 700 CDL chamber for the 270 in the near future (for antelope). The 7600 was my first gun and I would not trade it for anything.

I truely believe that if you read up on this and ask real experts who aren't biased, you will be VERY hard pressed to find any meaningful difference in these three guns for deer hunting. All three are very common, almost the standard, for deer hunting.

If it were me, I'd choose based on the look and feel of a particular gun, what I could get the best price on and/or choose the shop I liked the best and buy what they happened to have in a gun I liked.

Now if you're at all thinking of slightly (and I mean SLIGHTLY) more specialized use in addition to deer hunting, that might sway you toward one cartridge or another, re-emphasizing slightly! I think the 30-06 will be slightly more versitile for larger game, the .270 will be slightly more versitile for longer range shooting. All three will do fine for all of that though.

Take three cards, write a caliber on each, put them in a hat and choose! And have fun.
