Lead Shot

Is it true that if you kill something with lead shot you can't eat it because it's poison? Do I have to use steel shot if I wan't to eat my game?

RE: Lead Shot

I just finished off the last of the wife's cow elk and found several pieces of lead from the bullet she used to kill it.

Lead won't hurt you unless you eat it. Just be careful when eating game harvested with lead and you'll be fine. I just picked out the pieces, marveled at them for a minute, put them on the table to be disposed later, and kept eating. Same goes for birds. Usually you'll bite into the pellet and spit it out. I don't think our digestion system processes the lead shot as efficiently as, say, a bird with a gizzard and I suspect if you swallow a few pellets they'll pass before they'll do much harm. I would imagine it would take quite a bit of shot to make you sick (more than a half-dozen pellets).
