ballistics on under 50yds
wondering if anyone knows if a 30-06sprg 165gr. sierra gameking SPBT would be + / - under 50yds? i know many ballistic charts don't go under 50yds unless handgun ammo.

Quilly, it would be high. Approx. 3/4 of an inch high at 50 if you were sight 1-2" high at 100 with 3006 165gr. BT.

i know the ballistics for 50 i was curious about under 50yds?

RE: ballistics on under 50yds
my 3006 was zeroed at 45yds and i shot a deer at about 10 ft and it hit perfect....that was with 180 gr psp corlokts...my shots are all close so sighting in at 50 yds is a must for me..and most shots are about 25-30 for me...

RE: ballistics on under 50yds
Do you have a scope on the rifle? How high is the line of sight of the scope, above the bore? Unless you've sighted in for 50 yds or closer (not likely), you'll hit low. The flight path of your bullet starts below the line of sight, scope or not. Ballistics charts showing velocity, point of impact, energy and such are to be used as a comparison index at best. Simply shoot your rifle at different ranges and get a real-world example of what happens. Shooting is more fun than reading ballistics charts anyway.

RE: ballistics on under 50yds
how can i tell how high is the line of sight from the scope to the barrel? can it be easy just by measuring it? from the bell of the scope to the barrel?
i use leupold 2 piece bases and leupoldlow mounts on my a-bolt. |
RE: ballistics on under 50yds
also at my range the closest i can go is 50yds.

RE: ballistics on under 50yds
I find that if you are that close just hold dead on and the bullet will hit within an inch or so of your aiming point. The end result is that with a lungshot it won't make any difference.

stubblejumper..
but if i am 10 feet up in a tree and a deer walks almost under me i would like to take a shot at it. i would be looking through my scope down at its back mostly. |
RE: ballistics on under 50yds
Quilly-If your scope is 1.5" above the bore which is pretty standard you can't possibly be out more than 1.5" even if the deer is at the muzzle. As the distance increases you will be closer and closer to point of aim until the line of sight crosses the bullet path which will vary with the distance you sight in at.

RE: ballistics on under 50yds
Well put Stubblejumper. Ya beat me to it.
Why so concerned about the impact point at these ranges? Unless you are trying to shoot them in the eye or something it ain't gonna matter. Edited by - power on 10/05/2002 22:18:46 |

Here's a link to a ballistic calculator; you'll need to know the B.C., you can get that from the manufacturer. Generally speaking, you're going to be a hair low out to approx. 25 yds (which is approx. where the bullet will cross your line of sight, depending upon what distance you have that rifle zeroed for) and then will be approx. .5" to .75" high at 50 yds.

I've read about singing and music. I know a number of musicians including professionals. I've held a few musical instruments in my day. I have yet to be able to play an instrument and sing a song, let alone give a concert. You need to get out and recreate different shooting scenarios. A one gallon milk jug is about 6"x8". That is a good representitive size of a deer's vital zone. Place these at different ranges around and under your stand. Shoot at angles and ranges that you'll encounter while hunting. This will show exactly what you and your gun or bow can do. There is no substitute for getting out there and shooting. If you want to make it even more fun, fill the jugs with colored water.
