You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
Just to let you all know, this weekend after I got home from chasing antelope.I went to the gun store and bought one of those Stevens 200 bolt actions.I got the last one thay had in 300 win mag.
I got it home Sunday night and put a set of Weaver bases and rings on it and a old Sightron 4x scope. I had my wife pick up a couple boxes of ammo for me yesterday,PMC 180 gr SP.I set up the bench out side the garage and bore sighted it,the fired 10 rounds, cleaning after every 3.Got the scope centered and moved the target out to 100 yds.I fired 3 shots, walked out to see where I was and I about $h!t,3 jagged holes all touching about 2 inches high.I then moved out to 200 yds,set up fired three shots, walked out and to say the least I'm impressed a measured group of .75 inches. This is just off bench, with gun laying over a couple pillows and me holding it tight. This gun is not pretty, and could use a good recoil pad but man o man this is a shooter. I would recomend it to anyone. not bad for 259.99 BBJ |
RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
All of the Gun Rags have given it a good review. The best one I read said that its just what they have come to expect from Savage. However its nice to see that someone is not trying to retire off every unit it sells. I have been thinking of trying one but I have no idea what caliber I would pick up. Do you know what all calibers it comes in? Glad you got a tack driver.

RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
BBJ I have praised that gun several times on here. We have had one (270) at work for about a month now and I can't give it away. Despite my best efforts to convince most "clueless" otherwise, when a newbie or budget hunter comes in and asks about entry level guns it is the first one I pull off the rack. They of course typically end up with the 710s or 70/Simmons combos that I already have. I just can't convince them that for about the same money I can sell them a 200 with a ProStaff Nikon that is a MUCH better rig and being a Savage it will just flat out SHOOT the lights out of anything else.
I think the fugly appearance and the "cheap" feel of the stock is what turns most off. I know better, I have two Savages and wouldn't hesitate owning a 200 ifI needed another synthetic hunting gun (ok, so I really would rather have an Accu-trigger!:D) BBJ it sounds like you gotta keeper that is a REAL shooter! ;) RA |

RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
My father in law just got one in .243 and mounted a Leupold vx-1 3-9x40 on it and is getting groups under 1 inch at 100 yds with handloads. The trigger was pretty bad, breaking at around 8 lbs on a digital scale, but he worked on it and got it down to just over 3 lbs, feels much better now. They say you cant adjust the trigger on them, but hes pretty good with rifles and triggers, and got his adjusted much lower than it was. It is exactly what he was lookig for, cheap, light, and accurate, something he can leave in the truck all the time for around the farm, watch out coyotes!

RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
Good shooting gun but that stock is a flexible flyer..How good/bad is the trigger since its not an accutrigger?
|
RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
I found the trigger to be a little stiff(4.5 lbs) but it breaks clean and has no creap at all.The stock is a little flimsy but it is pillar beded. The barrel is free floated, and has a nice balance.

RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
Do they make replacement stocks for the Stevens guns? With that kind of accuracy I'm already interested in one.

RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
I dont find the looks all that bad. I mean it could look like the 710's and really need a face lift!:D

RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
I got a savage 111 in 30.06. I shot a 3 shot, shot group at 100 yds off of sandbags and was able to keep a group of less than 1/2 inch all in the x ring. I was shooting remington psp 180gr. I got the gun used for $200 out the door and I agree, it looks pretty cheap with the synthetic stock but that F***er will drive tacks!!!! Id buy another one in a heart beat. My first savage, and I reccomend it to anyone.

RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
My 110 in .243 is also a tack driver and I would recommend Savage rifles to anyone.

RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
I've got a Savage 111 .270 and I was kind of disappointed using factory loads. I couldn't get anything to shoot under 1" groups, Rem CoreLokt 130gn psp were the best though. I tried different scopes and rings with no help. Finally I started reloading and the first couple loads did a little better, around 1". I wasn't happy so I gave it a good cleaning and went at it with JB bore paste. I also sanded the barrel channel in the stock as it was slightly touching the barrel near the barrel nut. I'm not sure what it was but the last group I fired at the max load was .563" for 5 shots. I couldn't be happier!!! It's almost as good as my Savage 12BVSS .223. At least I know its a real shooter now. :D

RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
use to brag about savage until they !@#$ed me with a M16 300wsm... 1.56" groups from a rock steady rest... Sent it back to savage to make it right and they sent it back with a 5 shot group of 1.56" and said theres nothing wrong with it. I sold it and bought a Rem...
Will never buy another Savage!!!!! "You get what you pay for" |
RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
Not to be an a$$ but the guy next to me was shooting a Sako, well over 2x's what I have into mine, and well over 2x's the group size. I guess some people get what they pay for, others not.

I've got a model11 in 223 anda a 116 in 7mm and both shoot excellent(although the 7mm is a lot louder than I like). The only load I tried in the Stevens was Remington managed recoil and I was very happy with them.I didn't measure the group but they were somewere in the inch range give or take.

RE: You guys are missing a real sleeper!!!!
I know savage rifle are known for there accuracy... That is why I bought mine... But once I get screwed once I will never get screwed twice... So far I have bought 2 Rem M700 and both shoot!!!. Also Savage rifle are really lacking in the looks department... I would be willing to pay a extra 50 bucks to have the mirror finish nocked of there stainless models;)
