RE: DUMB QUESTIONS SHORT/LONG ACTION
ORIGINAL: Navy
Okay, kinda new to the rifle thing. I'm a bow hunter. I just bought my first rifle, Remington 700 SPS in stainless. It is a 30-06, is that a long action or a short action? Also, I'm putting a leupold scope on VX-II in silver. What is the best base for this? I'm thinking STD. Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. Good to be back on this board. Was away for a while.

Also, must you put a stainless scope on your gun? It kinda looks like a guy in a tuxedo should be shooting it when you do that. They look alrighton the smaller guns like the10/22 rugers that are stainless synthetic. Try and visualize a black matt scope on your gun. It finishes it off very nicely. JMHO
Nice gun BTW

RE: DUMB QUESTIONS SHORT/LONG ACTION
It's not cartridgess up to .308, but certain, specific cartridges. The .308 and the cases based off it (.223, .243) have short actions, while so do the winchester short mags. the 30-06 has a long action, but so does its smaller cartridges like .25-06, 270, and .300 win mag. in summary its is the case size length and design, not a diamater of bullet that dictates whether it is a short or long action.

NAVY...Sounds like your cartridge ?? has been answered. As for your scope issue...I you still want more stainless on top...do as the other guy suggested...matte finish scope, but dress it w/ stainless rings. I have one set up this way and it looks pretty sharp...added bonus, by not adding more stainless you cut down on reflection as well.
