The efect of wind on shots with .300 winmag?
Hi all. Some of you may know from posts that I am going elk hunting this month for the first time (Chama area). You guys have helped with boots and bullet types and weights. Thanks
I got to a 200 yard range for the first time last weekend. I thought I was sighted in pretty well. But I was shooting about 3-5 inches to the left at 200 yards. Wind was from the right at 10-15 mph. How much would a 15 mph wind push a 180 grain bullet at 200 yards This from a Custom Argentine mauser in 300 win mag with free floated 22" barrel, and Docter Optic 3x9x40 scope. Thanks OKCMCO PS my back up gun, a savage 110 in '06 with acutrigger and bushnell banner 3x9 scope shot well at 200 yards. 2-3 inch groups. I am shooting better with it than my win mag. MAybe I should use it on my elk hunt as my main rifle? '06 with 180 grain oughta do it for muley and elk, right? (250 yard self imposed range limit) |

Wind driftin 15 mph crosswindfor a 180 grain bullet at 3,000 fps is about4" at 200 yards. So I would consider the gun to be pretty well sighted in.Personally, I consider the .300 Win Mag to be the best all around elk rifle out there. Roskoe

I agree, I get 4.70"@ 200 yards with a 180gr. bullet at 2960fps and 15mph crosswind. Good luck on your elk hunt.

That depends on the bullet. Is it a pointed boattail,a flat base spitzer or a round nose? The pointed boattail could be as little as around 3" while a round nose could be as much as 7.5". Data taken from the sierra manual second edition.

Go to www.norma.cc www.realguns.com or www.handloads.com to use their ballistic calculators to determine wind drift. Good luck.

The bullet in question is the vanerable Nosler Partition in 180 grains. I don't think it is a boat tail but it is not a blunt nosed bullet.
