Thunderchicken- If you flip your rear sight on a 96, there are sight graduations out to 2000 yards, but anyone who can shoot further than the 600 yard graduation on the top of the sight definately has my respect.:D

I wouldn't shoot a brown bear by choice with the 6.5 swede lol. I would put the 30-06 as the minimum for brown bear. Personally, I would prefer a .375H&H lol.

Greek is asking about Blackies not Browns or Grizzlys!;)
I posted the picture of the blackie I killed with a .30-30
carbine.

For quite a few years the record book Grizzly was one taken with one shot from a 30-30. While the 6.5x55 would not be my first choice for the big bears, I know it would do the job. The 6.5 bullets at 6.5 velocitys penetrate very well and give up very little to the larger rifles.

If you want to use the swede on brown bears use the 29" barrel and attach the bayonet.....you might actually use it.

It won't do you any good but it might boost your confidence until the bear snuffs you out.

Back in the days those rifles were designed, it was doctrine to be able to fire at unit size targets (like a company) in an area. The 2000 yard sights were designed to hit an area, not a specific individual. Early Lee Enfields actually had volley sights graduated up to 3500 yards or so.
