12ga slug howto?

I have a Mossberg Model 88 12ga. with a modified choke. I would like to shoot some slugs through it at some hogs. WOHOO!!!

As this is my first weapon - I have no idea what, if any, changes I have to make to it. Do I need to change to a full choke and that's it? Or will the modified be ok? Will a slug damage the barrel? etc. etc.

I don't think a rifled barrel will be necessary because it's going to be up-close hog slammin'. I took my son squirrel hunting this weekend and we walked up a creek bed with oaks on the side. Around one corner was a hog that scared the heck outa both us us when he squeeled and ran. Too bad a .22LR and #7 1/2 wouldn't have brought him down. :-)

Thanx...

i;d say try em out, get the rifled slugs, they;ll shoot pretty good, all i ever use outta my bird gun is brenneke slugs, i can get a 4inch group at 75yards no sights all day., don;t even waste money on sabot slugs, just get the rifled ones and keep your distance under a hundred yards and you;ll be fine. on chokes i;d try the modified choke or an improved or cylinder, i personally don;t have much luck with tight chokes and slugs

So the brenneke slugs and my existing modified choke would work? ie. no weapon damage?

I find stalking up to 50yds or so more challenging than sitting on a ridge 500m away. I just wonder how many times I'm going to get winded before I finally get a shot! hehe...

stay with the mod choke or better yet(if there screw in chokes)go with the improved cylinder.full choke is to tight.your right about the rifled barrel,a smooth bore barrel works great for up close and personal sluging.brenneke makes a fine slug but don't limit your self with out testing other brands.every gun(shotgun or rifle)shoots differently, what works in mine may not work in yours.find the one that shoots best in your gun.my favorite is 1 1/4 oz active slugs, deadly accurate out to 100 yards.

i don;t think they;ll harm your gun with a tighter choke but your accuracy will suffer.

and stalking is more fun, i've gotten close enough that instead of shooting just for fun i;ve wacked them on the bum with a rock. talk about funny

JC-1...

i use brenneke slugs out of my remington 1100 with a screw in MOD choke. ( just found out it was a MOD not a FULL last week when i took it apart ).
no problems at all.

i personally think these screw-in chokes should be made for just bird guns because it does mess up buckshot patterns compared to fixed barrel chokes.
