Some help PLEASE!!!!

Well I am going to buy a Model 70 Featherweight, Stainless BUT I don't know if it should be in a 30-06 or the 308. So what I am asking is what caliber would you get and why that caliber?

Thanks alot for the info.

Well, I probably aint gonna be much help here but I will tell you any way.

The dead deer, elk or what ever will never know the differance between the two cartridges and likely neither will you.

The 30-06 will have about a 100 fps advantage over the 308 in any given factory loaded bullet weight. That doesn't ammount to crap in the real world of hunting.

A 308 will fire a 180 grain bullet at about 2625 fps the 30-06 will do about 2700 fps.

Sight them both in to be zeroed at 200 yards and you the 30-06 only has a half inch advantage at 300 yards and only a 2 inch advantage at 400 yards and a hundred foot pounds more energy.

Honestly, my decision would be based on if I wanted a long or short action.

i would choose the 30-06. great cartridge and you won't have any trouble finding ammo. the 06 will also handle larger bullets better than the 308. plus to get above a 180 bullet in the 308 you'll have to handload.

Bigbulls is right. There isnt a world of difference between them up to 200 yards. But, if yer gonna take stuff at further than 200, go with the 30-06. Both are just dandy! EJ

Why buy a featherweight rifle with the heavier full length action of the 30-06? Sounds like a horse designed by committee to me.

If I was buying a featherweight and HAD to choose between the 2 cartridges you stated, I would choose the 308 b/c of the short action and SLIGHTLY less recoil (than the 30/06).

But I personally wouldn't get either pf those rounds in a featherweight......a .243, a6.5 X 55, a 7mm/08, or a 257 Roberts would be my choices if going in a lightweight rifle.

The 308 wouldbe ok though.

Ballistically they are like just about equal! The 308 in standaard loads does the same as an 06 with less recoil. They both can be bought in any store, and both have military ammo on the market as well. For both were and are military cartridges! Enjoy which one you do buy thought. vangunsmith

I beg to disagree here. The difference is about 2.5 ounces and the advantages in the .30-06 with 180 and heavier bullets is worth the slight and almost unmeasurable difference in weight.
