RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
Good morning bud,I believe the main difference in the BDL and the ADL is the ADL has a "Blind" Magazine like a Savage 110 .The BDL has a"Hinged" Floor Plate. Both are the same action. If you don't have one already picked outget with me and we will get you what you want in what ever caliber you want. You know the deals that I always run across.BTW Are you and Capt. Brad coming down for our annual race andhunt this year?Looking forward to it.

RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
What say young man, long time since we last chatted. I hope you and yours are well.
I was looking at a brand new 700 ADL with a Bushnell scope for $449 at Gander Mountain. I have no credit cards and they have a deal where if you open a VISA account through Gander they give you $75 worth of merchandise if you make over a $300 purchase and it is interst free for 6 months. I figured I might buy the gun after opening the account, get my $75 worth of stuff, pay the card off in full right after that and close the account!!! LOL We have lived without credit cards for the past 5 years and I do not want to mess with them any more. The only money we owe is on the house and I really like it that way. I have already commited this year to hunt with a friend down in Lee county Va. so I will have to decline the hunting/race offer this year, I just don't have enough vacation time to do it. If you want to we can hook up next year for the race/hunt. |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
Not sure if you are talking new or older. I have owned 4 ADLs, all pre J lock wood stock models. I can't and won't say anything bad about any of them. Three of the 4 werereliable, fired when they should have and never when they weren't supposed to, fairly accurate, had ok triggers and the bolts never fell off. Out of the box, all but one (a 30-06) shot sub 1.25" groups with factory ammo. Those three were also very consistent with a wide variety of ammo. The 06 was a dog.
I don't own any now as I found none really fit me well. I found the felt recoil was significantly greater with those rifles than any other I owned, again due to fit. My money now goes to rifles that fit me better but all things being equal, I'd buy another. |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
Thanks for the info portage, funny thing you should mention fit, this gun fits me to a tee! I tried several others that just didn't pull up right.
I am according to my father a natural shot, of course in my opinion once you start using a scope the "natural shot" portion goes by the wayside. What I do like about the gun so far is when I pick out a target at a distance, pull the gun up and it just seems to naturally come right up to my shoulder and the target is right in the scope. I have always found that a gun that fits you tends to shoot better and recoil less then one that doesn't. One quick question if you don't mind, when you say sub 1.25. groups, what yardage are you talking about, and second when you said the 06 was a dog, are you talking about grouping and if so how bad? Do you think it was just that gun or all of them? |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
ORIGINAL: Tazman I am thinking of buying one in 30-06, any comments positive or negative would be appreciated. I'd prefer the new CDL today aesthetically but as far as function and fit....the ADL is good to go IMO. |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
Just picked up a 700 BDL in 30-06 and it shoots like a dream. Given it's not anADL, but there's a lot of bad publicity about Remington rifles out there right now and I'm here to say that they still make some fine rifles.
As a heads up - Gander Mtn. in Fredericksburg wanted $669 for the 700 BDL, Leesburg Guns wanted $699, Dicks in Manassas & Fair Lakes both wanted $599, and I special ordered it through Walmart for $550. It pays to shop around. All these places are near you, I live in Centreville and hunt all over Northern & Central VA. Another thing I didn't like about GM was that while they have a heck of a selection, all the guns are out on the shelves so anyone can handle them. What's to say a gun hasn't been dropped, etc.? Maybe you could score one out of the back, I don't know.I'll be honest, after seeing the price andthe horriblecustomer service, I didn't stick around long. Here's a link to my 700 BDL, I didn't see the ADL: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3170109 Hollarif you have any more questions. |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
1.25 inches or less off a bench with a Leupold VariX-II 2x7 or 3x9 at 100 yards.
The 30-06 was, in my opinion, one that got through quality control. It did not feed well, cartridges would bind inside the magazine and it shot 2-5 inch groups. I believe with some work it would have been straightened out but I wasn't inclined to spend the time. No, I don't think that was normal for 700 ADLs of that period (early 90s vintage) |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
Coolbrze0 yesterday they had a new 700 ADL with a Bushnell scope at Gander for $449. I was in there about 2 PM and actually wound talking with the head gunsmith for about 15-20 minutes, really nice guy. Oh one more thing the gunsmith feels the same way I do, just because the factory bore sights the gun doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done again upon purchase, he said it was only $5.
Portage nothing wrong with those groups at all. I have a feeling as you said, you got one that slip[ped by the quality control folks. |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
Let me throw another question out there about 30-06 ballstics, if the gun is dead on at 100 yards with 165 grain bullets where can I expect it to hit at 50 yards? 150 yards? 200 yards?
I have hunted for over 40 years and all of it has been with rare exception terrain that if your gun can shoot accurately to 100 yards you were good to go, as a result until know I have used a 30-30 exclusively when hunting with rifle, in the military (many moons ago) I shot further but the ballistics were drilled into your head! |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
Taz. . .as noted here ADL=no floor plate. . .I have one in a .270. I think the triggers are crap but that can be delt with. It is a good shooter, I will have it for many years to come but as I have collect others it will spend more time in the safe. A good working gun that won't make you cry when you scratch it.

RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
IMO, the ADL is (was) one of the real bargains of the bolt-action world. They tend to be more accurate, out of the box, than the BDL or CDL....because the stock is stiffer in the action area (without the big hole for the floorplate)....and the action is naturally bedded better in the ADL. I've owned three of them....and all have been great rifles. I recently had two ADL synthetics, both in .308....and both would group 1 MOA or less, with proper ammo....after only a trigger adjustment. I have not had an ADL with the wood stock, so I can't comment on that model specifically...but I imagine the the same holds true for them. There is a lot to be said for a blind magazine-type rifle, especially when stock stiffness and accuracy "out of the box" is considered. The ADL model is, of course, exactly the same as any other Rem. 700, as regards the metal bits (action, barrel, etc.). It is only different because of the stock and magazine arrangement (and the metal finish).
The ADL, in my view, is the perfect "knockabout" rifle. I have always favored simple, less-expensive models anyway....about which I do not have to care too much. My ADL's served me very well. I would not hesitate to buy another - and in fact, if I ever look for another Remington, it will be an ADL (if I can find a good one...since they are now out of production). The new "SPS" is the same rifle, of course, just with a floorplate magazine and a different stock. Another small factor which attracted me to the ADL (and which was useful in the field) is the fact that, with no floorplate opening, there is less chance of water/ dirt getting into the action, in the field. I used my rifles hard, when I hunted quite a bit (much more than now). If the ADL is available at a good price, which it should be, since it's a discontinued model - I would not hesitate for a moment in purchasing it. |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
I have a 700ADL in .270win. I've had it for about 11yrs now and its the only high power rifle that I own. I haven't had any reason to buy a new one.
Out of the box it is amazingly accurate and has never failed one the range or in the field. I have found that it groups well with most bullet brands and types. Best so far being the 130gr Win. BT's and worst being 130gr. Rem Core-Lockts. As others has mentioned, the only thing I don't like about it is the STIFF STIFF STIFF STIFF STIFF STIFF, did I mention STIFF trigger. It feels like its set at about 50lbs. I tried to adjust it, but when I took it apart it looks like its one that can't be adjusted. It doesn't bother me hunting, but it does get on my nerves shooting at paper. Good luck. |

A .30-06 sighted in at 100 yards will shoot the same as a 300 untramag from 0 to 200 yards sighted for the same 100 yards......no discernable difference to the shooter.....and with considerably less recoil. That statement can't be stretched to 300 or 400 yards however. |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
Well, I won't smear you. You're right on the mark.

RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
StrutnBPS,
The trigger on your ADL IS adjustable. Remington only uses one type of trigger on it's bolt-action rifles....they are all adjustable. You said that you thought that yours 'did not appear to be adjustable' - I wonder if you are referring to the clear sealant applied over the adjustment screws. This is used to ensure that the settings do not change due to vibration, etc. This sealant is just scraped away with a suitable tool (a small knife blade works well for this)....then the screws can be adjusted. This can be a "DIY" project....BUT, if you are NOT familiar with the proper procedure - and tests to do afterwards to ensure safety - then, by all means, take the rifle to a gunsmith. A Remington trigger adjustment can be completed, by anyone who knows how, in 30 minutes or less....and many gunsmiths charge only about $25 for this. It's an easy service to perform. There is absolutely NO reason that you need put up with the trigger at an uncomfortable setting. These triggers are designed for 3 to 7 lbs of break weight....and most that I've seen are factory-set to the upper end of that range. A simple adjustment is all that is needed - and you will like your ADL even more. |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
I have had a dozen or more Remington ADL's Half were the newer ADL Synthetic. No ADL that I ever owned performed less than pretty darn well. All shot under two inches and many with the right load shot much closer to one inch. The ADL has been discontinued as of last year. Scheels sold all their remaining ADL's For 329.00. I bought one in 270 and although I have not fired it yet, I will be suprised if it won't beat 1 1/2 from the box with any good factory load. I will report on it when I get a chance at some range time. I have a new Aetec sitting on the shelf wauiting. I also bought a new Swift Premier 4x12 which I may use. I have had perfect performance for years with these two models of scopes. Well under 200.00 when I bought them.

RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
I have 3. 2 synthetics and one with wood stock. Im not gonna say how they group lest I be called a fibber..lol. Lets just say they wont be changing ownership anytime soon. James did you get a synthetic adl 270? I will never hesitate to buy a 700 of any sort. I have 5 and love em all. You will be well served with the adl as it is a fine gun! All of mine had the trigger adjusted from 2.5-3 pounds....my smith charges 10 bucks for the job. So it isnt hardly worth my trouble to learn how to do it.

RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
Hey Taz,I have a old Remington Model 788 in.308 that I would probally part with for you for about $200 or $250 I think it has a 4X weaver or tasco on it.It ain't real pretty but that old gun will shoot with the best of them .I have never seen a 788 that did'nt shoot good.

RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
GORSE
Thanks. When I took it apart and looked at it, I didn't noticed any way of adjustment like a knob that most rifles that i've seen do. So I didn't look at it any closer. Since season is already in and I don't plan shooting at any paper, I probably won't mess with it this year. But as soon as season is over, I am going to take a look at it again. B/c I really hate the stiff trigger. Thanks again |
RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
DD. I got the Synthetic one. I hope it shoots as good as the other 700's that I have had. I can adjust the trigger on the Rems and have done a lot of them. I couldn't pass them up at that price. They only had 243, 270 and 30-06 left.

RE: Opinions on Remington 700 ADL?
Well folks thanks for all the info and advice, I bought it Friday afternoon and it shoots like a dream. I am going to properly bench shoot it this afternoon or tomorrow and let you all know. BTW the trigger pull is stiff, I will need to adjust that.
