RE: Need a new gun (well i think i do anyways)
I think a 7mm Mag is your best option. It is as flat as the 270, with the punch of a 30-06. Good luck!

josh, I too love the .270. It has taken antelope, mulies, and a ton of whitetails from ranges point blank to way out there. If I were you and planning to go after something bigger than mulies and wanted to beef up your battery a little I would get me a Savage 11F in 300WSM.
I don't think you will be disappointed in the Savage. My last 3 rifle purchases have been Savages and they all shoot well. And the Accutrigger is great. Use your .270 with aquality 130 gr bulletfor everything up to mulies and the 300WSM for everything larger using 180 grainers. I may step on a few toes but I don't think the 7mm mag has enough advantage over the .270 for any deer sized critter to know the difference. It does shoot a bit flatter and hits a bit harder but using quite a bit more powder. Good luck. |

well i have been messing with my model 710 and i do not think it is messed up . it has always had a not so smooth bolt and i was a little worried about breaking it but after messing with it i got it to operate like it should. so i think i will get by with it this year then sell the 710 next year and get a savage in a .270 maybe (or 7mm rem mag or .308 who knows :D). maybe i will get me a new .204 ruger now... :D

RE: Need a new gun (well i think i do anyways)
I found myself in the same situation a few weeks ago , had a 710 30-06 that malfunctioned ( bolt came out 2 times for no reason) it did everything I needed to up to that point and if all I was doing was hunting whitetails here I would have stayed with it but we're going to colorado next month so I broke down and started gun shopping, sold the 710 to my little bro for 180 and took my nikon scope off of it. the weatherby vanguards are where I started looking , then the model 70s, rugers, savage, etc etc.
I ended up buying a Model70 super shadow ( camo/blue) with the claw extractor in 300WSM at cabelas for 500 bucks, plus40 for rings and bases(at another store)and 27 sales tax. I bought the winchester because I've had a model 70 before and love the action. The triggers are easy to get done. This gun should be capable of taking damn near anything shy of...... I don't know what on any continent I'll ever hunt on. Walmart has the shadow which is a black/blued gun without the claw extractor for 425 I think. The other gun I would really look into is the Tikka, I've seen them for about 520, and they come with rings so you save 40 bucks there, sweet action and it has a clip. The 270/30-06 are good calibers. I got the 300wsm just because it gives me a few more options distance wise. But how many countless animals have been taken with a 270/30-06? I've been hunting with an 06 for about8 years now and taken atleast a dear a year with it. What it comes down to is how much you want to spend and what your comfortable with, sometimes its hard to justify spending the extra money for that little bit better gun but if you can you probably won't regret it. |
