The 284win is a good short action cartridge suitable for deer and elk.

That's likely the best.....but the 7-08, and .308 will work too.

It's an immensely powerful short action round good to 250 yards in good hands. It has power to kill at 400 yards for the guy that can shoot it that well. Muzzle energy exceeding 3,500 ft-lb from a 18 1/2" barrel can be achieved. It's truly a big game round for moose, elk, and even the big bears....although some might disagree with the big bears comment.

The 350remington produces ballistics very similar to the 35 whelen. It certainly is not one of the better choices for longer ranges.

I would have to agree. I wouldn’t shoot anything past 250 yards with my 350 Rem. Mag. , unless I really knew the drop at longer distance. That big bullet can drop pretty fast. I think the 35 caliber would be a good choice for moose or elk although I’ve never hunted for them.

is the .284 a pretty flat shooting cartidge? how does it compare balistically to the 7-08?

The .284 is a slightly larger case but they shoot very close to each other. The .284 chambering is quite common in custom short actions but it's off spring the 6MM -284 and .25-284 and 6.5-284 are all more popular than the parent round.

For the actual difference in performance I'd choose the 7-08. The gains in availability of cases and ammo totally outweighs any very small difference in velocity.

For flat shooting the 7-08 rivals the old .270 for tradjectory and that's impressive.
