Buying a 30.06

Id like to get a new 30.06 for next year. What would you recommend in the $600.00 and under range?

I'm a fan of the Winchester M-70 but there's a lot of other gyns out there in that price range. Howa has established a good reputation. Savage is attracting a lot of followers. Remington's pump is a fine gun if bolt actions are not in your liking.

I just bought a fine .30-06 in a Mauser post war action (J C Higgens) for $220. This is a very fine gun so don't be afraid to look around the used market as well.

I would go with a Winchester Model 70 Classic Sporter, Feather Weight, or Compact.

I own a JC-Higgins Model 51, and according to my resurch the rifle was made at Fabric National in Belgium. Check out "Rifles Of The World" by John Walter.

Good luck.

I second that. The Weatherby sporter in Blued or Stainless barrel is new for '05 and the price is very attractive.

Last winter I bought a Savage 114 and absolutely love it. Its light weight and extremely accurate. The trigger used to be where Savage fell short of other guns, but the new AccuTrigger is awesome and really easy to adjust pull weight. I also shot the Remington 710 which is in the same price range as the Savage and I was unimpressed. It felt cheap. Those are the only two guns I've had experience with around $500. Remington 700 and Winchester Model 70 (assuming bolt is what you like) are really nice, but you are going to pay a lot more.

J.C.Higgins Mod. 50 (FN Mauser), Mod.51(Husqvarnar), Mod.52 (Sako),
Mod.53 (FN Browning), Mod.54 ( Winchester)

J.C. Higgins Model 50Sears and Roebuck had a real sleeper with this Belgian-pedigreed, early-'50s bolt-action sporter.By Payton Miller

Chain-store classic: The J.C. Higgins Model 50 was introduced in 1951 and was replaced by various other models from different gunmakers. This one is no longer "dead stock." It features a Bausch & Lomb 2.5-5X, Redfield mounts and a recoil pad.
Throughout his life, my dad owned one deer rifle. No, it wasn't an old Winchester Model 94 or Remington Model 721. It was a J.C. Higgins Model 50 bolt action that he bought new in the very early 1950s. Made by Belgium's Fabrique Nationale on a commercial Mauser 98 action, the rifle was purchased through Sears and Roebuck about the time I was graduating to solid food. It came with a Weaver K4 scope with sweated-on Weaver rings and two-piece Weaver bases.

Rebelhog:

Does the side of your model 51 state "FN Action Made in Belgium"? If it does your rifle was made in Belgium by Fabric National, if it dosen't it guess it was made by Husqvarnar.

On the side of my Model 51 action it states "FN Action Made in Belgium". Both the Model 50 and 51 were manufactured in Belgium at Fabric National. My model 51 is getting a trigger job now, but I will take a photograph and email you a picture of the action's side. I have researched this extensivly because this was my fathers rifle, and I wanted to know it's origin. Good luck.
