Used .223 bolt action
Well, I was at Gander the other day and saw a fairly nice used .223 bolt with scope for something like $450. I didn't get a chance to see what brand name or whatnot, but I've been wanting one like it for a little while now. I've never bought used before, so do you guys have any pointers?
The only thing I can remember is that it had the scope, but also that it's wooden stock was sort of flat, like it had no finish. It was not glossy at all.... Does this mean it's an aftermarket stock that wasn't finished? Thanks for your opinions. |

RE: Used .223 bolt action
I've owned six .223 rifles and all shot superbly well. Sako, interarms mini, and Remington 700
Stocks vary all over the place and can be customized by customers to any finish. Go back and get details...like manufacturer, model, barrel length, make of scope and magnification. .223 rifles are rarely shot out as they don't burn a lot of powder but they can be so look in the barrel for throat erosion. Chances are that it's just fine.....but $450 might be a tad high. you need particulars to judge price....is it a luepold scope?????...or a Tasco...it makes a difference in price. |

I'm sick today, so I might not be heading out to Gander. But if I do, or my dad, I'll make sure to get the info. Thanks.

Jade, I often drop by a Gander Mtn store and find that their used guns are priced pretty high. Same for Cabelas. Not sure where you live but check your phone book for some gun shops in your area. You may find what your looking for there.
Of course, depending on the model rifle and scope, this could be a good price. A lot of companies are finishing their stocks with a matte type finish these days so it could be a factory stock. |

You can get a new Ruger 77 Mk II at walmart for about $460. My brother and I both have them in .223 and both will shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards. I put a Timney trigger on mine and it is worth the money. I have and have seen a number of very accurate Mk IIs and would not hessitate to buy more.

RE: Used .223 bolt action
Well, it turns out to be a Savage model 11 topped with a Bushnell Banner 4-12 power. It was in very good condition with only a few dings in the stock. No AccuTrigger, so I assume it's an older year because all current Model 11's come with the AccuTrigger. The price was $420.00, so I snatched it up. Anyone think this was a bad idea?
