RE: Need Cheap New gun that can drop a grizzly
Having a gun that will kill a bear, and having one that will stop one charging in it's tracks are two hugely differently things!! Nothing that will do that is a gun you will want to plink with or shoot deer or smaller game. The recoil will be too severe and the shells will be too costly. And on smaller stuff the damage will be greater than you want.
Not to mention it might not matter what you get, you could end up dead any way if the bear really wants it that way. I bet one could take a full tube of 12 gauge loads and still take your head off in one swipe if it really wanted to. And after shooting it the first time I bet it will want to more so then it did to begin with. I agree with the others, get some bear spray and learn how to conduct yourself properly in areas where large bear are present. It is a pretty rare occurance actually from what I understand. Sort of like taking a gun with you in the ocean incase you get attacked by a shark. It happens, but the odds of getting struck by lighting or accidently shooting yourself are better ( I would say much better in your case:D). Now if you want to hunt them, I think a 30-06 would probably work. Better yet get a 300 win mag or something simular. Of course, like I said you will not want to go plinking with a weapon like that. However if there is a bear 30 or 40 yards away from you and it charges, I don't think it will stop it. You will probably only get one shot off any way, and you better hit it in the head. Bear move AMAZINGLY fast for thier size when they want to. I bet by the time you racked the second shell in the chamber you would be getting slapped in the head by a bear claw. And don't forget bear are smart enough to hunt us, incase you injure one and it runs away. They don't call them dangerous game for nothing. If you really wanted to take something with you I agree with the others, a remington or mossberg pump with slugs and buckshot. But I would not rely on it, I would still try to be as cautious as possible. And I also agree with the one guy, the words "cheap" and "stop charging grizzly" should never be used in the same sentence. You don't see many people walk into the gun store and say "I'm going to hunt dangerous game up north, give me the cheapest POS rifle you've got!". After reading all your posts on here I am very unclear on what it is you actually want, or what you intend on doing with it? If you want to screw off, shoot deer and the ocasional varmint I suggest getting a .243, 25-06, or a .270. Those are pretty versatile flat shooting calibers. And most can be very accurate. I would suggest the AR, but I don't now what the laws are in canada for deer hunting. Some places don't allow .223, and I personally feel it's a bit small for deer, but would work with proper shot placement and the proper bullet. I wouldn't worry about the bear, I think you are making a bigger issue out of it then it needs to be. I would worry more about poachers or something like that. And again, the 12 gauge would work well in that situation;). Paul |
RE: Need Cheap New gun that can drop a grizzly
Yup Im getting the shotty. The reason I was still looking at a gun for other purposes was cause I wanted to try target practice and shooting a spread of buckshot I thought would be too easy for shooting cans ect... Anyways it will come in handy for home defence not that I really need to defend my house, but its good to know its there. Im looking at the different 12 guages, I want to try and get one where I can hook up a flashlight under the barrel.

RE: Need Cheap New gun that can drop a grizzly
Why would you want a flashlight mounted to the gun?
All that stuff does is make the gun heavier and more cumbersome to shoot accurately. Besides that if I were an intruder the first thing I would shoot at would be a flash light cause it is either mounted on the homeowners gun or someone is holding it under their pistol with their weak hand and guess what is right behind the light........................... yep, your face. I couldn't begin to count the number of people that have us mount lights, lasers, grips, and all kinds of other fandangled "tactical" stuff on AR's and shotguns. And not a single one of those people have any use what so ever for "tactical" gear. Honestly what would a gun mounted flash light be used for in your application? |
RE: Need Cheap New gun that can drop a grizzly
Not so I can be some kind of super tactical swat guy. Just for when im sleeping in the tent at night I can pop out with more ease to look at what the loud breathing in the bush beside me is. I would hate to have to hold a flashlight in one hand and the shotgun in the other. Shooting off a flare would be no good either, I could start a forest fire. I could use duct tape and a flash light but I would prefer to mount one on the gun. Thanks for the replys. Looking thru my local gun dealers sites now.

RE: Need Cheap New gun that can drop a grizzly
Well that makes more sense.
You can get all kinds of brackets to mount a light to the magazine tube of a shot gun. From a simnple mag light to a fully integrated Surefire system that runs about $225. |
RE: Need Cheap New gun that can drop a grizzly
Wow pricey. I might just get a good shotty and try it myself. If I use a tap and die set on a pipe that fits the end of the flashlight and thread the end of the flashlight, it might work. Then weld the pipe bit to the end of the cocking mechanism as long as it dosent get in the way.

RE: Need Cheap New gun that can drop a grizzly
cuchullainn,
Mounting a flashlight onto a shotgun yourself is NOT a good idea. Most flashlights are not able to handle the recoil of a shotgun;the bulb will burst after one shot. The surefire forend that bigbulls refers to is specially designed to accept recoil;the bulb is isolated with built in shock absorbers. If you mount a surefire 6P on a shotgun, the bulb will burst.Andthe Surefire 6P is the same kind of flashlight that is used on the shotgun forend setup, but its bulb isn't isolated. |

There are some advantages to a flashlight on a tactical shotgun. If a family member just happens to be out of bed at night, that doesn't deserve a death sentance, and that light could mean the difference. Plus, if you're using a flashlight andknow where the intruder is, you can shine the light on him. Most tactical lights are bright enough that it would temporarily blind him, and would allow you to ensure it's not a family member. At this point, you probably caught them off guard, giving youthe first jump on the shot. I do agreethat it's just asininetowalk through the house with the flashlight on .The flashlight should only be used for giving yourself an edge, not the intruder. |
RE: Need Cheap New gun that can drop a grizzly
Yes, I know. However most people have never had the training to know how to properly use a light in a situation against an intruder.
That's why I asked what his application would be. |
RE: Need Cheap New gun that can drop a grizzly
I dont expect Navy Seals to break into my house and steal my TV. So I dont think any specialized flashlight training is needed. :D

RE: Need Cheap New gun that can drop a grizzly
I'll just get an LED head lamp. That will be easy to get on in a hurry.

RE: Need Cheap New gun that can drop a grizzly
I would get a pump shotgun you can probablyfind a loner if it is just for one trip. If I were buying a gun for protetcion from grizzleys I would also make it useful for other purposes, since the chances of being charged by a grizzley are relatively remote.
My pick would be a Remington Model 7600 pump rifle in 35 Whelen. Accurate to 250 YDS and can cycle rounds faster than levers or bolt actionin up close and personal situations. |
