well I just looked up the ballistics and it showed that the 30-30 was more powerful than the 35. I've herd that the 30-30 can take an elk you just have to be picky but if you don't want to do that then i would opt for the 444, 450 or the 45-70.

Personally I would and did go with a 35 Rem over a 30-30 Win. Yes some of the ballistics charts you'llsee will list the 30-30 as having a little bit more energy.I wouldn't take that as gospel you're notcomparing the same caliber. The 35 Rem. uses a .358" caliber bullet. The 30-30 Win uses a .308" caliber bullet. The 35 Rem. is .050" of an inch bigger and the bullet is usually 30 to 50 gr. heavier, and thats just factory ammo. I know how well the 35 Rem. work on white-tail deer, its just awesome. If you handload you can get even more power out of the 35 Rem., I don't think you're going to get much if anymore power out of the 30-30 Win.

I also have a 444 Mar. Ibought it touse for black bear, wild boar and anything larger then deer that I'll be hunting in the woods.

I also think a Remington model 7600 in 35 Whelen would be a good choice. If you have to have a lever action check out the Browning BLR in 358 Win..

I used a .35 rem for many years when I first started hunting.I killed alot of deer with it but they almost always ran a long way, despite being solidly hit in the vitals.I also witnessed many killed with the same caliber by my father and brother with the same results.More than half the time there wasn't an exit wound, especially if one or more shoulders were hit.

For the life of me I can't figure out why people think this caliber is sucha cannon. It certainly will not stop a house. We're talking about a 200 gr bullet going less than 2000 fps out of a 20 inch barell. It's obsolete for a reason.

but which caliber gun?? does the 35 rem pack a bigger whallop or is the 30-30 the boss???
I want to purshase a gun... and yes the right ammo.. Are you saying.... Dont go near elk with a 30-30 or a 35 rem??????
Neither is really an elk rifle, although you can certainly kill elk with them. Of the two, the .35 Remington is the better choice. But if I were buyinga Marlin lever action rifle for deer, bear, and elk, it would be either a .444, or better yet, a .45/70 (not a .30/30 or a .35 Remington!!)

elde, I would think twice on using .30-30 on elk for shots over 100yds,
but for deer and black, the .30-30 with a 150gr NP in the chamberwill do.
I shot this bear with a .30-30 Carbine @ under 100yds.

I really like the 35 Rem. This was my first hunting rifle and is still one of my favorites for dense foliage.
