question on 16ga
 

I have an old double barrel 16GA, side by side. It is a Springfield and underneith that it says J.Stevens Arms Company. The S/N is E6418I. It was given to me as a gift some years back. Does anyone know how old this gun is?
Also, how well do 16ga slugs do on deer? A friend may use it this year. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks.

no slugs in a double barrel.they dont shoot straight.one barrel goes one way and the other barrel goes another.

How old is the gun and have you shot it?
Real old 16Ga. were 2 9/16" chambers while newer ones are 2 3/4".
You might see if a new shell will fit with out forcing it.

I do not know how old it is, which is why I asked in my post. I gave all the info on it I knew to see if anyone on here would know. It does not specify on the gun whether it is 2 9/16" or 2.75", but the 2.75" shells do fit nicely w/o any forcing, so guess it is not too old. I have fired it when I first got it and it shot great.

It sounds like your gun is new enough.
I was always told slugs could be shot in a gun in good condition as long as it was NOT FULL CHOKE or smaller.
They will impact differantly depending on distance because SxS are regulated to shoot at a certain distance. Also the bead sight is not really made for aiming like you do a rifle. But obviously people have shot a lot of critters with a bead sight. Soif you do dicide to use this shotgun for slugs just see how it shoots before going hunting. (I know that is stating the obvious)
