Help me pick elk & deer round for 7mm WM
 

Well, now that I have the weatherby-help me pick one bullet for both elk & deer so I can get good with one bullet and not have to re-zero. I am not a reloader...yet. But I'mn sure I will become one with this gun...ammo is ridiculously expensive.

The 140gr tsx will certainly work well on deer or elk.It will shoot flat and outpenetrate heavier bullets including the 160gr and 175gr partition.

I would try the Nosler Partition in 140/150 grain. It will certainly do the job. My second choice would be the Accu-bond in the same weight. I had good performance from the 139 grain Hornaday as well in the 7 MM Rem Mag.

I would try the 150 Grain Barnes TSX boattail it has an incredible .529 BC and will shoot as flat as any 140 Grain due the high BC. Itwill have far less wind drift, and will have highest retained energy downrange. You may want to plot the velocities and BC of a bullet vs the 150 TSX in the link below to quantify results.

WoW! I figured everybody would say 160 gr. Shows what i get for thinking :D

That heavy thinking will get you in trouble.:D If I were after moose or big bears then I would choose the 160-175. For elk and deer I would lean toward a little flatter trajectory.

Since you don't handload yet it will reduce your choices a bit. I shoot a 7 mag and see no need to go heavier than 160 for game up to moose. Last fall I took a bull moose with a 160 Accubond ( 1 shot ) and 2 pronghorn with 150 ballistic tips ( 1 shot each also ). Wasn't too impressed with the accubond. If I was looking at 1 bullet for everything I would shoot 150 partitions if I hunted deer sized game more and 160 partitions if I hunted larger elk sized game more. All this would also depend on which shot best in my rifle. Make sure you keep all fired brass for that weatherby as it will save you a bunch when you start handloading.

Depending on which barrel twist you have in your Wby will make a difference. I,ve found in mine that i use there 154gr.for both deer and elk,and have no problems and my rifle loves this one and shoot real accurate and consistant with this bullet. vangunsmith

I have no disagreement with anything anyone else has said, but I'll mention the bullet that always worked well for me (with my 7mm mag.) ..... 160 grain Nosler Partition. I never had one fail, whether it be Elk, Mule deer or Whitetail deer. (I've never hunted Moose or Bears.) I think that the 7mm mag. is flat-shooting enough, even with 160 grain bullets, to make a good shot at whatever distance at which you are likely ever to (actually) shoot. Perhaps not at 450 yards....but from 0 to 300...I think it was fine.

Perhaps there are better choices, I don't know. I simply wanted to mention that which always worked well for me.

I would go with a 160 gr. Weatherby Nosler Partition. Good luck.
