12 ga. sabot slugs
 

I have a remington 870 express 12 ga. and am shooting 3" remington copper solid sabot slugs (at about $12.00 for 5 shells).

Should I expect to pay such a high price for any sabot slug, or are there some more reasonably pricedalternatives on the market? Any recommendations will be appreciated.

I find them for sale at Bass Pro at 9 dollar from time to time, but thats about the going rate for saboted slugs.I never had good luck with 3" copper solids in 3 slug guns. But the 2.75" really does well. I love em.

Yes, if anyone tells you otherwise, check the ballsistics information for the shells they are recomending. Most cheaper sabot alternatives will have poor ballistics compared to the Copper solids.

Keep in mind there are other sabots in that price range that shoot flatter than the Copper Solids. You should at least give them a try if you are already spending the money. Unfortunately, you will have to test them in your own gun to see if they are as accurate as well.

Unfortunately that is the down side to the new slug technology from what I can see. All of the saboted slugs I have seen are around 10 bucks and up for 5 shells. A bit extreme in my opinion.

You could probably shoot non saboted slugs if you wanted to, mine seems to like them. They are a lot cheaper. However they foul up your barrel something awful and like said above, the ballistics are not that impressive in most cases. Nor is the performance compared to a premium saboted slug bullet.

I got the whinchester 400 grn 1700 fps platinum tips for 10 bucks at walmart.

You pretty much have to find what works good in your gun and then buy a few boxes of it to sight in and practice with. It can get expensive and time consuming if you don't have a lot of money up front.

However once you get it set up it shouldn't be that big of a deal unless you shoot it alot. A couple of boxes a year should suffice. I would think Maybe another box now and then to practice with. These really are not guns you go plink with. I may try taking a woodchuck with one though.

Good news is, once you find a load your gun likes, a slug guns barrel should change much, and that load should perform well for years to come. Down side is, practice is pricey.

They are pretty pricey, but the upside I found is, take a few shots and get er sighted in and it's never taken more than one of those big ole slugs to take down any deer I've pointed it at!!
I shoot the Winchester Supreme Partition Gold Sabots and I think they're about 12 bucks for 5. But my Model 1300 Winchester loves them and I've never been disappointed at the results.
If your confident in you gun/slug combination it may not bea good idea to switch totry tosave a couple of bucks on a box of shells. My opinion is, when the "big one" is standing out there I want to know that I have the right shell in my chamber, one that I know without a doubt will perform.
Just my opinion partner! I can't get my dad to go along with my mindset,he still shoots the good ole 3 dollar box of Winchester rifled slugs and usually gets a couple of deer a year!!

You think so uncle. All of my friends have changed over to sabot'd slugs from 3 dollar box stuff in the last 5 years or so.. I should use rifled slugs, but hate getting all that lead out. Behind my house, I shoot 4 or so deer a year and all are litterly 20 yards. Its only a 5 acre piece of land but is a finger to private farms. So all the deer herd up in there. Its a real honey hole. But the downside is, I got to get them down,if they run to the other farm, I have probably lost them, to the mass's of hunters there. So thats the reason I use a slug gun back there and a semi at that.

Yeah I do think so bigcountry. You, me and alot of other uys who try and stay on top of tech shoot sabots. But I'm telling you, think outside your world. There's so many smooth bore rifled sighted shot guns out there. There isn't as many folks shooting rifled barrels as you think.

For smooth bore, I like Brenneke Black Magic and for Sabots Win.BRI, all
in 2-3/4"
