I worked in the local gun shop one fall in Las Vegas, New Mexico. An old gentleman of Spansih background came into the shop one day with an old Model 94 Winchester RIFLE with a 26" barrel, and asked us to sight it in for him. The barrel threads were so worn that you could grasp the rifle around the receiver, and shake the barrel so that the muzzle flopped up and down around 4"! The stock looked like something someone had whittledout of a cedar fence post (maybe they had!). Most of the blue was gone, and the whole thing was "armory bright", with no finish of any kind on the wood of the stock or forearm.

We offered him $10.00 for it on a trade for a new M94 carbine (which at that time was selling for around $82.50), but hesaid NO! It had beenhis father's rifle. So we took the thing, builtup the barrel tennon with arc welding, re-threaded it, and reassembled therifle with correct headspace, and tried to sight it in. This provved impossible, as the bore was "dark". This means you could look down the bore, and see NOTHING!! A .308" bullet would enter the muzzle past the ogive! BUT, there must have been SOME rifling still in it, since it shot dinnerplate size patterns at 100 yards. So we set the rear sight toplace the dinner-plate group somewhere near the top of the front sight bead, and gave the gun back to the guy. He was just tickled to death to have his gun restored, then told us how he'd killed a big mulie buck last hunting season with that rifle-at 800 yards!! ( He didn't say if it was running or standing still, but I'll bet it was running!!)

Now how's THAT for marksmanship??

lmao, I don't know what is the funniest part of this topic, the original post or the follow ups! My sides are still hurtin...

I can believe a lucky shot or two, but repeatable consistency at those ranges on running deer? I don't know what bothers me the most about that situation, that he took the shots to begin with, or that he continues to do so?

Guys don't fall for it. Its a trick. No hunter would be that irresponsible. Just a guy trying to get your guys goat.

If your daddy makes them shots constantly, I'd get him a sponsor, get him on tv, and make some money, like that ol boy that shoots flying aspirins with a bow and arrow. I'd say shooting a flying aspirin at 20 yards with a bow and arrow was quite a bit easier than shooting a running deer, free handed, in the neck, and at 400 yards.

Don,t get discouraged with some of these threads. Just,that some people have a hard time telling distances.The average shot around the u.s. is around 75yds. In states were long distance shooting is the norm a shot at those distances can be the average.This is true for i lived in such places. On the run,it takes a lot of practice.to hit a deer,but once you get use to shooting like that,one can say it like a video game. Anything hit in the neck will drop daead thats for sure,and to do it twice,Is freaky but can be done. A lot of people will ? you if you even talk about yardage like that,for they haven,t done it,nor seen deer that far away in there experiences. A bad stigma some have is well,if i haven,t done it,seen it,its no possible,well they are wrong!! Its all possible,and it s great that you look up to your dad like that and don,t stop enjoying hunting with him as long as you can!!! vangunsmith

Thanks alot vangunsmith. I really appreciate your post. Where we live in Nebraska long distence shooting is just normal for us and everyone else we hunt with and aleast you understand that.

p.s. I can't imagen hunting a spot where you can't see past 100 yards.

Seems like distances are one of the problems at hand.Maybe a optical engineer can get him a pair of glasses.I see what your talking about now Rebel Hog,have a good one. vangunsmith
