RE: which bullet brand
Mooseslayer, I don't think you could go wrong with 180gr bonded bullets of one type or another. I have had good success with both the Hornady Interbonds and Nosler Accubonds. I hunt the same animals as you do(except grizz)and use 150's and 165's in a 308 and 140's in a 270WSM. I load up 165's and 180's for a few friends who shoot 30-06's and they have had great success as well. If you are going after grizzly I would go with at least a 180.

RE: which bullet brand
I have 100 rounds of .30-06 loaded to 2,800'/sec in my 22" M-70 featherweight and they shoot 1.25" groups at 100 yards. I feel totally prepared for any big game on the planet except for the dangerous stuff like cape buffalo or brown bears etc.....
This load will kill deer as well as the largest plains game or moose or elk or what have you. There's other bullets that will do it as well but the Swift A-Frame is my favorite. |
RE: which bullet brand
A 180 gr .Barnes X, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, Winchester Fail Safe, or Nosler Partition will also work well for you. Good luck.

RE: which bullet brand
Give the 165 or 168 grain Barnes XLC a try. The Barnes manual lists 3091 FPS at max 62 Grains imr 4831. That will give you a max PBR of 307 yards and 2368 ft/lbs at 300 yards.

RE: which bullet brand
150 and 165 gr. Rem. Core Lokt are some good bullets.

RE: which bullet brand
The barnes tsx is turning out to be a very accurate bullet and it also seems to expand better than the previous x bullets.

RE: which bullet brand
Most all of the premium bullets work very well these days. Some are designed to acccomplish certain things The Barnes are known as Penetraters while the Partition is known as an expander. On deer size game any of the good bullets will do the job. After taking many many game animals with the 30-06, I can't recall the time when the Old Hornady interlock has failed in any way. I quess were I limited to one bullet for the 06, I could sure live with Hornady bullets from 150- 180 grain. For the biggest game I Moose, Big bears, I would load the 200 grain Nosler Partition. I have not used the A-Frame enough to judge it but I have heard nothing but good things about it and Vapo is most likely right on his opinion of them.

RE: which bullet brand
I would say use a 165gr or 180gr Barnes TSX bullet. I use both in the barnes XLCs and they are very accurate, I have only shot 1 deer with the 165s but it preformed very well.

RE: which bullet brand
If you want to have a do it all one load for all big game in your 06 I would choose the 180 gr. Nosler Partition. This is only if you want to develop one load for everything. There are bullets that perform better at each end of the spectrum but no one bullet serves as an all around better than the partition in my experience.
