RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
My whole point in the question was that you are in a sort of survival situation (maybe even self imposed.) and you gun would feed you. My choice of a .22 mag rifle was based on the foolowing things. It is light and handy You could always have it with you giving you abetter chance of tarets of oppurtunity. How may times have you been walking to your stand or blind and you kicked up a rabbit or saw alot of sqirrels? I think rimfires have probably accounted for much more game than centerfires, albeit probably not more sheer poundage of game.
Also with a rimfire you could take ALOT of ammo which I like because I Miss alot LOL.
CMA3366a had agood suggestion with a CZ 427 in 22 hornet. Didn't think of that one but it is about a perfect choice.

I would take my marlin 1894 in 357 magnum with peep sights. This gun is light and carrys easily. I can carry lots of ammo on me and ths magazine holds 10 rds.

Ruger #1 .270, 5 180 grain cartridges, 5 110 grain cartridges, and 2 150 grain cartridges. The 110's are light enough to take off a squirels head, the 150's work for yotes and deer, and the 180's will take down a moose if you hit it in the right spot.

I think that if you are going to take a center fire rifle I'm under the opinion that it should be a .223 Remington, and you should use FMJ ammunition. This would give clean holes in all game, and while it may not give the fastest kill, it will certainly preserve more meat on smaller animals. The .223 Remington is not the most powerful cartridge on the planet, but I know that it can kill the largest game, especially in real life situations where you throw trophy collecting out the window. As far as the make up of the rifle itself I would pick a sturdy bolt action with a synthetic stock and a stainless barrel. There would be iron sights on the barrel, but I would also advocate a good quality fixed power scope. If you looked at something like a Remington Model Seven stainless synthetic with a Leupold FX model scope I really don't think that you could go wrong.

Thats a loaded question (pun intended). I t toatlly depends where you live. If you were in say...Alaska, a 22 cal would be susbsitance alright....subsistance for the bears and wolves. I would take a marlin guide gun in 45-70.
