RE: .243 For Deer Hunting !
there's a lot of guys here that use them for deer....I don't because i don't have on and i can use my .300 win mag, and some will say it's not powerful enough. I personally think it'd be fine.

RE: .243 For Deer Hunting !
Not my choice but a 223 will kill a deer and so will the 243. Your bullet choice would be fine. You already have a couple better rounds for deer however.

RE: .243 For Deer Hunting !
The .243 is a varmint gun that can be used on deer with hevier better constructed bullets. If you are looking more for a light deer gun than a varmint gun look at the .260. If you want a varmint gun you can also use for deer the .243 will work.

RE: .243 For Deer Hunting !
If you like the 243 ,I would get it.I haven't used a 243 for deer in several years but have took quit a few with one out to 300 yds, never had to shoot one more than once and never lost one.
I still shoot it at the range pretty often and it does well on paper too. The 308,260 and 7/08 is a great deer rifles too.I have all three and they are fun to shoot and all will take deer. |
RE: .243 For Deer Hunting !
the 243 is a great gun whether you're starting out a youngster or are a seasoned woodsmen. by all means it will kill deer as long as you put the bullet in the right place.

With the right bullet it's deadly on deer! It's not just a varmint caliber...

RE: .243 For Deer Hunting !
I've used a .243 since 1980...killed at least 130 deer with...My favorite factory loadings inside 200 yards are the Hornady 100 gr Interlock in either Custom or Mag loading, the Remington 100 gr CoreLokt, the Federal Premium 100 gr Nosler Partition and the 100 gr Sierra GameKing BTSP....I would use either of these that group the best in your rifle...I have killed several deer with all the above loadings...
Instead of using a ballistic tip in the .243 the Federal Premium 85gr Sierra GameKing BTHP is a better choice...higher velocity so its flatter shooting and it penetrates better than the Winchester ballistic tips (and some soft points)...I use this as my long range "bean field" loading...But, its not really needed inside 200 yards...Good Luck... nchawkeye |

If you use the right bullet, you won't have any problem knocking down a big whitetail with a .243

RE: .243 For Deer Hunting !
With well constructed hunting bullets of 100 gr. the .243/6mm is a great minimum caliber for any whitetail deer! When I say "great minimum,"I mean just that! It does an excellent job on deer sized game, not just an iffy, bare minimum!

RE: .243 For Deer Hunting !
The .243 is totally and completely adequate for deer and pronghorns. Some folks even use it on elk.....

What's wrong with the 7mm that you have? Why do want a .243?
