rifled slugs in rifled barrels
will shooting a rifled slug in a rifled barrel damage the barrel? I know that they are designed for sabots and wont make a rifled slug more accurate but can i still shoot a rifled slug through it?? and then clean the lead out of the rifling if im going to shoot sabots. Humm?

RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
I personaly have never tried it and i wouldn't.mainly because you want the bullet to "tweerl" smoothly as it traveles in the barrel.I thik this will happen only if either one "barrel or bullet" is rifeld not both, scince running two thrided surfecaes aginest each other will cause higher friction.
well i wonder if someone did tried it <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
I've never done it personally. But everything I have heard, read, etc has said do NOT shoot rifled slugs out of a rifled barrel. The main reasons i've heard are the amount of deposits the lead leaves in the grooves is next to impossible to get out, and that the large rifled slugs can wear out the rifling. The only thing I question about this, is that rifles shoot lead or copper plated lead, so what is the difference? Again, I don't have any personal experience with this, thats just what I have been informed. By the way, why would you want to shoot those pumpkin balls out of a rifled barrel anyhow?

RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
is the rem lead sluggers a riffled slug?
i have ued the remington sluggers out of my rem 1100 barrel. not bad accuracy out of them. |
RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
The rifling on a slug is only there for show, it inparts no spin. I think they are a little soft to shoot thru a rifled barrel, but try it and see, and see if you like to remove the lead.

RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
Grab a box of Lightfields you'll be impressed with the accuracy and power.
I'm shooting a Rem 1100 rifled Rem slug barrel with cantilevered scope mount. I have shot the Win Supremes and Rem Coppersolids w/o the accuracy of the lightfields.... 100 yd 1.5 to 2 in groups |
RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
YOU CAN SAFELY USE plain lead rifled slugs in your rifled barrel, but these tend to lead up the bore sometimes, causing accuracy to drop off after a few shots. Also, leading is sometimes difficult to remove. I recommend using slugs like the Winchester Partition Gold, rather than Foster-type, or other soft lead slugs, if you have a rifled bore. Granted, these lead loads are a lot cheaper, but why bother with a rifled bore if you are not going to use the proper ammo in it??

RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
Herman and Bill, why do you say that? It may be possible, but what was your source of the testing that say they don't spin. Very curious.

RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
i also remeber reading somwhere that the rifling on the slug wot impart a twist, at least not one sufficient to stabilize the slug. it might have something to do with it is easier to smash the lead down on the grooves than turn the bullet in the barrel, so it takes the path of least resistance
propmahn you can never have too many guns |
RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
Its a marketing gimmick from when they were first introduced I guess, but have you ever seen the rate of twist labeled on the box, wouldn't it make scence if the rifleing on a slug was effective that companies would come out with different twist rates and advertise the benefits of the rate of twist they are making? The was it is always described is that slugs work like a badmitten shuttlecock, heavy nose end goes first.

RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
I always doubted that the rifled slugs actually caused a twist or not. I do know that I have had a couple of guns that worked better with them than anything else. And yes one was rifled. I never had a whole lot of trouble getting the lead out, but, with any lead bullet you do have a good chance of leading. As far as hurting the barrel I would have to say that the jackets or copper solids would hurt it more. Lead is softer than copper, even if it has been heat treated or a large amount of tin, silver, etc. But in either case unless you are shooting 100's of rounds per week I dont think you will ever notice (at least if you are the average type shooter who puts maybe 50 rounds more or less through the gun per year)
The best bet is to pick several types of slugs go out to the range and see which one groups the best. If the leading is too bad to stand then use the jacketed. Just remember when that big buck is in your sights you want to know that the slug is going where you are aiming. Just a few thoughts MK MK I measured once cut twice and it still is too short |
RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
Some of the guy in my group use rifle barrels and standard slugs with good success. All the data says to use sabot slugs for best accuracy. They get great accuracy with foster slugs out of a rifled barrel. Go figure.

RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
"Herman and Bill, why do you say that? It may be possible, but what was your source of the testing that say they don't spin. Very curious." Foster-type (and other design) slugs have been photographed in flight. Quite often, the "rifling" has been smeared off as the slug travells down the bore and through the choke, it any. There is very little rotation noted for the Fosters! However, some types, having much deeper "vanes", such as the Brenneke, do seem to show visible rotation, but NOT FAST ENOUGH TO CONTRIBUTE MUCH TO STABILITY OR ACCURACY!!

RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
i have shot many, many, MANY rifled slugs through my rifled barrel and have never had any problem. i have noticed no loss of accuracy. i am sure, that if i were using a sabot, my range would be greater.

RE: rifled slugs in rifled barrels
I shoot the 3-inch Magnum Brenneke gold colored slugs through my 12 gauge single shot H&R "Ultra Slug Hunter" (the ultimate deer slayer!) You can look at the slug and clearly see it's a "foster" type slug with rifling and it says of the box in big letters inside a red star "FOR RIFLED BARRELS ONLY). Believe me...these slugs are monsters. If you can get a clean shot, they'll take a deer WAY out there. Brenneke delivers the meat my friend!
