Yes, it will devastate a bird. However, be aware of which birds are legal and which ones are not.

As for brands, the only one I've shot in a long time has been a Gamo. It was a pretty nice pellet gun.

For sure thatll kill a bird, Even a daisy red ryder shooting a bb going about 400 fps would kill a bird. Birds are not so hard to kill. Sqiurrels however are a different story.

RE: pellet gun

what kind of pellet gun is this? and how much are you spending on it? I doubt it really goes as fast as 1000fps but thats still way more than enough to kill a bird.
i think some of you enjoy killing animals a little too much.

RE: pellet gun

well i really dont know a good brand, price would have to be below $100. i'm just trying to get a few birds here and there. also if you are really trying to find out why i want a pellet gun, see my thread in the upland bird forum.

what would be the greatest fps that could kill a bird?

Their are quite a few on the market that hit 1000 fps. Check out air rifles on Cabelas. They have several of them.

I have several pellet rifles, my favorite is an RWS 45. It's worth it to pay more and get a really good pellet rifle, it will probable out last you!!!

I've chronographed mine, and it pushes pellets 950 to 1050 fps depending on how heavy the pellet is.

With a decent hit it easily anchors squirells and rabbits!!

In my opinion your not going to get a decent pellet gun for under $150 dollars. And I highly doubt you will get one that shoots in the 1,000 fps range for that money. If you do it will be a POS would be my guess. Poor fit and finnish, crappy trigger, cheap parts and the such. I doubt it would last or be very consistant.

Good pellet guns are not real cheap, I have found out the hard way. It might be cheaper to get a bolt action .22 and shoot shorts or subsonic ammo out if it. You would probably get better results. Providing that is an option. You would most likely get better performance for less money. Heck my .17 HMR was only $200 dollars. 17 grn bullet at 2600 fps. It will flat out blow up a bird!

I think a great pellet gun for the money is the benjiman or sheridan series of pump guns. I'm not sure about the speeds, but they can shoot a larger pellet so the speed would not be as much. If you took care of it you would be able to give it to your kids when they were old enough.

I would try to find an Air Gun forum and see what they say. Although they might be very elitist and say anything less than 4 or 5 hundred dollars is complete crap and waste of money. I've never been to one, but I could see it happening. Most are probably target oriented.

I've owned a marksman, a beeman (gas spring) and a beeman/webly hurricane pistol. Among some of the cheaper pump guns by daisy and crossman. I had a buddy that owned a RWS and my uncle owned a Feinwerkbau. He lived in Germany for a while though. I have also played with some of the cheap chinese air rifles and the 100 dollar spring air types.

You deffinately get what you pay for with an air gun. My marksman was ok, I think it was around 200-250 dollars. It shot well was pretty fast, around 1100 fps I think. My beeman was great, but wasn't cheap. I think it was around 5 or 6 hundred for a reconditioned rifle. Fast, accurate and looked great. Just like shooting a nice center fire, but then it cost as much as well. My uncles gun was a piece of art in craftsman ship and design. I don't even know where you can get them anymore or what they cost. I did a search and all I came up with is target type stuff. His looked like a regular pellet rifle, just really nice. My buddies RWS was pretty nice as well. Inbetween the marksman and the beeman, or as good as the beeman. Depends on which models you compare. I nice gun for the money at any rate. The cheaper ones I have looked at have all been crap. You might find a nice one for $100-$150, but I wouldn't count on it shooting 1000+ fps, maybe 700 with a .177 pellet.

And with a spring type pellet gun you will need a decent scope designed for that purpose. These guns have a fair amount of forward recoil and vibration. They will tear a cheap scope to peices in short order. You don't have to get a real expensive scope, but make sure it is made for that type rifle. One for a cheap crossman pump gun will not work very well. Unless you get a benjiman pump gun, just about any decent scope would work on one of those ( You would have to get a scope mount, I don't think they come ready for a scope).

Good luck,
Paul

I'm not claiming to be an expert or anything though. I just played with them a little in my 20's (1990's). I was in the military with extra cash and firearms were a bit of a pain to own. Air rifles were less restrictive, cheap to shoot and accurate if you had a good one.

I can only comment on what I was around, or what the local dealer told me. And this was 15 years ago. I have looked at them recently though and the same things seem to hold true. The technology hasn't changed all that much. If anything the cheaper air rifles have become even more junky.

I didn't shoot competitively or anything like that. Just plinking and a rodent here and there. I took out a good sized california jack rabbit with the beeman though. I wish I would have known about archery then.

I would tell you to consider that instead of an Air rifle, but it would be even more expensive in the end.

There are alot of air-guns out there . For the $100 dollar or less range , there are still alot of good options . Surf around a little and you will find a good deal . My "pet" air gun shoots about 850 fps. It is a .177 . I have taken many rabbits with it , and a few birds . I think that a medium sized bird is much more difficult to kill than a rabbit or squirrel . Keep a steady hand , and go for head shots .But maybemy bird/rodent experience isn't typical.Good luck .
