300 Winchester Mag verses 300 WSM
 
What are the differences? From what I have read in outdoor magazines not much. Help me understand....

There is not much difference in the two especially when using bullets 180gr and lighter. The Larger bullets take up more case capacity on the WSM because the COL is limited to the magazine length. The short, fat, beltlessdesign added to the shorter stiffer action will give slightly better accuracy. My Ruger 300 WSM will shoot .5-.6" groups with my hand loads in 150gr, 165gr, and 180gr bullets.

Personally the reason for the magnum is to handle heavier bullets. If you only want to shoot 150-165 grains you could use the .308 Win nicely. The .300 Win Mag is the way to go IMO for the .30 cal. hunter that hunts truly big game.
