I need a 270

I am in the market for a 270. Anyone have thoughts on the 270 or 270WSM. I am going to be using it for a high hunt in WA for muleys. I have around a thousand dollars to spend on the gun. Just sold my Nighthawk. I am wondering about brands, models, bullets. I want something light but don't want to spend the coin for the ultralight titanium guns. Any info is good info. I am not looking to buy anything but a 270 caliber so no 06 bible beaters. I have read too many forums where they forgot about the real reason the forum was posted. Thanks.

A couple of rifles come to mind, one of which I have. First is the Remington 700 LSS Mountain rifle. It has a laminated stock with stainless steel barrel/action. It's my 270, and has been a very good, and accurate rifle. Check it out.

The other I'd look at is the Winchester Featherweight, available with walnut stock, and also with stainless barrel/action.

haugenna either of the two calibers you list will fit the bill for your intended purposes. The 270 WSM has a little better performance but the .270 Win. has more choice ofrounds and can be found a lot easier. Your Choice?
As for make of rifle try different ones and find which seems to fit you best in the price range you wish to spend. Don't forget some good optic's.

Good Luck

Well the 30-06 will do anything the 270 will.

Just kidding.

I realy like the 270 wsm,as for guns it is a personal prefrence.I realy like the Winchester FTW with the stainless barrell and action. But I could not wait for it to come out so I bought the Weatherby Stainless/Sporter and man what a gun.
As for ammo the 270 WSM is gaining in popularity and can be found anywhere guns and ammo are sold.

For deer hunting the 270 Win. would be my choice it probabl the all around best deer rifle ever developed. The Winchester Light weight may be your best choice for a light rifle. Myself I like a heavier rifle. For me they are just easier to shoot accuratly. JMO

The Tikka T-3's are quite light, about 6 5/8 lbs for the stainless-laminate model, and 6 3/8 lbs for the stainless-synthetic model.

Virginia7....Thanks both are great looking guns. Tough choice ahead of me. One question...what is the difference in performance if I have a 22" barrel or a 24" barrel?????/

270 Winchester.....M-70 featherweight...blued with walnut stock.....it's about as good as it gets in deer hunting without paying a mint for a custom gun.

Maybe 50-100fps loss in velocity. Magnums, generally, and I'm assuming this holds true for the short mags (WSM's) as well, tend to lose a little more when cutting barrel lengths.
My own choice would be the standard old 270Win. which is good for mule deer out to 400yds., and is available in either rifle.
The 270WSM simply adds a couple hundred fps in velocity to the standard 270Win. Of course, the ammo is more expensive, little more recoil, more muzzle blast, etc. Personally, before going to the WSM route I'd go for a rifle in 7mmRem.Mag., but then you did say 270, and lightweight.

RE: I need a 270

haugenna,

Wanted to check first before "spoutin off", but now I'm even more convinced to stay with the standard 270Win. I did some checking at Federal's website on a couple of loads for the 270Win. vs. 270WSM. Both of the loads noted are figured for a 200yd. zero.
270Win.: ..................@100yds. ................@400yds.
130gr. Nos.Part. ..........+1.4" ....................... -19.1"
140gr. TB ................... +1.6" ...................... -21.5"
270WSM:
130gr. Nos.Part. .......... +1.1" ...................... -16.3"
140gr. TB ................... +1.3" ...................... -17.7"

Just not enough difference for me to justify the WSM. Take the standard 270Win., sight in approx. + 2-1/2" high at 100yds., and drop at 300yds. should be about - 5"to6", and - 18" at 400yds.
