RE: Looking for a deer rifle, lots of questions..
Here I will set you up.
Deer out to 300 yds and beyond or closer.
Howa thumb-hole sporter 25-06 toped with a 3-9 Burris Fullfeild II balistic plex.
Ammo should be from Federal 117 Sierra Boat-tails sighted in to hit 2 inches high at a 100,put you top of the back hold out to 350 yds (granted no wind). That set up will take any deer that walks the planet.
If that don't float your boat get the 270 WSM in the Ruger or the Savage or the Tikka or the Browning or Remington,or Howa or Weatherby. The 270 WSM is here to stay I don't care what anyone says,it offers perfomance of the 270 WTBY Mag and cheaper to shoot. If you ever wanna hunt elk you have the gun.
A 130 gr Boat-tail should do the trick,as always top it off with a Burris II and hunt away.

Here's my 2 cents: Get the Tikka rifle in either of the .270 caliber cartridges. The .270 Win. would be my preference. As far as scopes gothe Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 would be my choice.
Good luck withwhatever you choose.

I would go with either a Ruger M77 Mark II Standard, All weather, or Sporter, whichever you prefer, in .270 or a Remington 700 in one of the various models in .270 and mount a Burris Fullfield II on it.

well nad i would look to a 7mm(rem mag)i use it for deer in missouri and its a excelent gun, except mine is a savage 111 model.if your stil open to gun suggestions id look into savage extremely accurate guns, second choice would be a remington i own both.for the kind of terrain youd be hunting i think a good bipod would be a good suggestion to you can order one from basspro for bout 60 dollars.on the 7mm for out to 300 yds id stik to 140 or 150 grn bullets. And lastely for the scopeat basspro you wont find a nikon scope for that cheapso i suggest looking inot bushnell or bsa im fond of the new bsa line called panther there real sheak looking and have excellent features. id suggest like a 4-12 or 4-14. the bsa has a 3.5-10 50mm for 170.00 and i like it alot.but theres my answer to your question.

I was really only looking at the .270 caliber until I started reading this forum and it sounded like the 25-06 caliber was a good deer caliber especially for longer shots

I agree with the howa thumbhole sporter but I like the .270. I'm a little biased though as that's all I have ever hunted whitetail with and I love it. In fact I just ordered a howa thumbhole sporter in 300 wsm. The actions on those guns are great for the price as well as the fit and finish. They offer the best bang for the buck in my book.
