No they are far from the same cartridge. The savage is slightly shorter than a 308 Winchester, which is a "short action" cartridge, and holds slightly less powder. Ballistics are near identacle.

The 300 Win Mag is a "long action" magnum based on the H&H case design. It is a belted cartridge which far exceeds the ballistics of the Savage or .308 Win.

300 Savage left, 308 Win. right, 300 Win mag far right.
No the two pics are not to scale but you can see the case differances.

The 300 Savage is an older round that is very similar to the 308. It will do almost anything the 308 will do. It came out sometime in the 1930's or so while the 308 came out around 1954 and about killed off the Savage mainly due to it beingwidely used in the military. The 300 Mag is a magnum, sort of a hot 3006 with a belted case and a longer case to hold more powder. They are all 30 caliber. Thats it in a nutshell without going into great detail.

the difference between a 300 savage and a 300 win mag is, a 300 savage with a 150 grain bullet pushes a muzzle velocity of 2,630 fps and a 300 win mag with a 150 grain bullet pushes a muzzle velocity of 3,290 fps theres a 660 fps difference between the two.

The difference between the two is the case. The one thing in common is that they both use a 30 cal. bullet. The 300 sav,300 mag,300Wby mag,308,30-06,30-30,and many more are all 30 cal bullets with different brass cases and designs. There is no know per say nomenclature for naming cartridges, that are USA made. Europeons do have some nomenclature in there millilmeter listings. hoope i helped vangunsmith
