Best Scope for Ruger SRH .44 Mag
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum and looking for some good advice. I plan on taking several guns to a feral hog hunt in Texas this year. One of my favorites will be my Ruger Super Redhawk .44 mag.7.5 bbl. I am looking to put a scope on this big guy and I'lm looking for recommendations. Do any of you have expereince with Handgun hunting in Texas or surrounding States and what do you use or would recommend? I wondering whether fixed or variable is best. I have looked at Leupold and Aimpoint so far. Thanks in advance. Porter. |
RE: Best Scope for Ruger SRH .44 Mag
Porter,
I do not have any experience with handgun hunting in Texas or the surrounding areas. However, I do have experience with the Ruger Super Redhawk .44mag with a 7.5" BBL and scopes. I topped mine with a Leupold 2X20MM handgun scope. I have had this combination for over 2 years and wouldn't change a thing. For the ranges I am shooting at (100 yards and under), I really didn't have a need for a variable power scope. If you want more specifics, I'd be more than happy to tell you want I have learned and know. Regards, Steve |

I would go with a good 2x or 4x on a handgun, also take a look at a red dot also.

RE: Best Scope for Ruger SRH .44 Mag
I have been using a Bushnell trophy 2 x 6 x 32 and a Millit 30 mm red dot on my Ruger Super Redhawlk in 454 for 5 years now .
With many thousand of rounds thru it between plinking loads and full power loads. Nice thing about the Ruger rings , I can change between the 2 and have almost no loss of zero. Johnch |
RE: Best Scope for Ruger SRH .44 Mag
I would go with a Burris Handgun Scope 1.5-4x20 Plex/Posi-Lock. Good luck.

RE: Best Scope for Ruger SRH .44 Mag
I've been carrying the same SRH as yoursfor years now. Topped it with a Leupold 2x from the beginning. I have tried higher power scopes as well as a Red Dot, and I always come back to the 2x. Found that higher than 2x on a 44 is just too much scope and I just really don't care for the Red Dot scopes on my handguns.

I have a weaver 2x on my SBH.
So far I have no complaints, very clear scope. |
RE: Best Scope for Ruger SRH .44 Mag
Thanks for the advice all-Excellent. Sounds like the 2X is great, although Rebel hog has a real nice look with that 2.5 variable. A VX-111, now that must have put a crimp in the old wallet. Really nice though!
One additional question. How have follow up shots been for you? How easy is it to aquire the target rapidy after the 1st shot? (yeah, I know, its a .44 with 300 grainers, but humor me). Anybody use any Stoney Point Bi-Pods or a re you "free wheelin." Thanks again, Porter |
RE: Best Scope for Ruger SRH .44 Mag
I have the 2x pistol scope from Leupold. It's good.

RE: Best Scope for Ruger SRH .44 Mag
I've got a 2x on my Redhawk and have killed several deer and a hog with it.
2x should do you just fine. Pay attention to the eye relief and field of view when comparing scopes. Believe it or not follow up shots do occur and have paid off for me......... twice. [8D] I just recieved a simmons pistol scope in the mail for another gun and the field of view is TINY in the model I bought. It is going back and going to be traded in on a Burris when it does. |
RE: Best Scope for Ruger SRH .44 Mag
I had mentioned I had ordered a Leupold 4x scope for my Ruger.on another forum .I was advised by mostto go with the 2x. I cancelled the 4x and got a Leupold M8 2X20 instead.I have it on a Super Blackhawk Hunter.I did have a problem with the eye relief. I got that worked out.On the Hunter the scope sits to far forward.I adjusted the focus which was advised by Leupold and that did the trick..I would stay with the 2x.I didn't know that adjusting the focus would change the eye relief.
