Savage Mod 200?

I am interested in the new Savage Mod200. Does anyone have any experience with one yet? Anyone heard bad or good things about them?

I have not tried one yet but I read a review on them that was pretty good. It mostly said that they had the quality and performance that they have come to expect from Savage rifles. That would be saying quite a bit IMO.

Picked up a copy of Outdoor Life that reviewed the Stevens 200, which I think you are talking about. They were impressed with it's trigger pull (2 1/2 lbs), even though the groups from it were averaging around 1.8 inches. They also said that it got the highest rating they ever gave (95) for price/value.

What would be the difference between the stevens 200 and the savage 110? why such a large accuracy difference?

From what I have heard the Stevens 200 is a Savage 110 without the Accutrigger. While most Savages seem to exhibit very good accuracy (the four different ones I used to own all did) it is certainly possible that a single model in a given caliber is not as accurate as the rest of them. I wouldn't read too much into any test of a single sample. Most posts I have seen have reported very good accuracy from the Stevens 200's in variable calibers, while a few have reported outstanding results. Fot that matter, shooter error could be the biggest factor. The only surprise involved here would be that a magazine writer was actually honest enough to report actual results, rather than "word processor groups" that many of them seem to fancy. Based on my personal experience with Savage bolt action rifles, I would be quite confident in the accuracy of any of the Savage products, be they the Stevens 200, a Savage model 11 or Model 111, or one of their heavy barrel varminters or tactical rifles. Probably more so than Ruger, Remington, Winchester or Howa, based purely on my own limited experience with those brands.

I am going to buy one in the next month or so in 30-06 caliber, and I will get back to you with my results. For around $300 I have to try it out. I have a Bushnell 3200 3-9 by 40 scope laying around and that is what I am planning on putting on it. I promise I will get back to you on what the results are.

I just picked one up in .06 and am very impressed with it. I mounted a cheap 3-9 scopeand with factory ammo was able to print several groupsat or below aninch. My trigger is probably around 5-7 pounds so that didn't help a lot. I am working up a load now and have some real high hopes for this gun. The stock is kind of boxy but, it sure seems to function well. I really like the gun!!

I've been wanting to get one in 243 or 223 but i just don't know which model i want to spend my money on. I am trying to decide which options are important, and which ones i can save money on.

Ron. Here is what I have read. As Savage has upgraded all of it's triggers to the Acutrigger, The idea of a Savage selling a 110 w/o said trigger doesn't sound like a good marketing strategy. Since Savage owns the name stevens as well as (I believe Fox Shotguns) They are capitalizing on the name and releasing the Stevens 200. It is indeed a utilitarian 110 with the old trigger. The old 110 trigger was the weakest point in an otherwise excellent and accurate (albeit not too elegant) bolt action. Pull weights can be 4-8 pounds and they are a little trickier to do a decent trigger job on thatn say a Mauser or Rem. But alot of old timers I know swear that the 110 is THE MOST ACCURATE factory bolt action out of the box.
I have seen the new Stevens 200 rifles for as litle as $265.00, which is rediculously cheap for a new gun. The fact that Savage only offers one action length, and no choice as to stock helps keep this gun cheap. And keep in mind that any gun which shoots around 1" groups is a good hunting rifle.
I am going on a guided elk/Muley hunt in OCT. I will use a DWM mauser in .300 win mag that My grandfather gave me. I will be buying a Steven 200 in 30-06with a bushnell Banner 3x9 as a spare rifle.
Hope that helps.
Marco

PS. Other cheap bolt actions can be had from Mossberg (ATR series) and Charles Daly mausers made on the VZ24 action.

You might look at Outdoor Life's test (July or August issue?)on the Mossberg ATR. Without coming out and saying it directly, they trashed that rifle.
