Syd, certainly the 338 win is a great caliber and one many see as perfectly suited in particular for larger game such as elk or moose. However many of each species fall to the one you have in the closet now, all that is required is a premium bullet and driving it home!

Not to desuede you from buying a 338 or whatever but I ceratinly wouldn't let it stop you from hunting elk if you go with some other to spend your savings on either!;)

As Skeeter said you have enough in your 30-06 for elk as it sits right now.

However, if you are going to "kick it up a notch" I'd encourage you to kick it up enough to make a difference.

When I stepped up from .270 to .338WinMag I found the difference in knock down/kickarse/killing power to be huge.

To get the BEST, and
ONCE IN A LIFETIME,
How much moneyare you willingto put towards this?
Those terms don't usually go hand in hand with a DIY hunt.

Well I just figure that it will be a long time before they open up the elk hunting here in Ontario. They have only been reintroduced recently. I don't know how many oppertuintys (sp?)i will get to go and chase Elk, but it is something I have always wanted to try so I guess where is my best shot to bag one on a budget? If that makes any sense.

I would go to northern B.C. in the prophet muskwa area.I hunted the area about 5 years ago and turned down 6 point bulls every day.I ended up killing a large 6x7 bull on the 8th day.You can also take a moose or a caribou on the same hunt.
