Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
Was doin my usual walk through of a new Wal Mart near me last night. Was at the gun counter looking at what they had....a guy was there lookin for sights for his gun. I made mention of having a set I would give him cause I always take em off my guns. The associate at the counter looked at me in amazement when i said I always took em off my bolt guns and asked hatefully "Why?" I proceeded to tell him how I liked to get my scope as close to the barrel as possible to get better line of sight and cheek weld. Wellll...he then proceeded to tell me I was basically stupid as any smart shooter would never remove their sights and would also always use see through scope mounts. At this point I couldnt quit laughing and had to walk away...lol.
I wonder if they even screen the folks they use in those departments? Oh well..ya better know what ya want when ya go in that gun department and be willing to argue for it...:D |
RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
Just about every time I buy something gun-related at Wal-MartI've had to do the thinking for the cashier. There is one guy at my local store whom I can tell is into guns, but he's almost never there when I go shopping. Last time I was there I asked for several boxes of ammo in various calibers: 12 gauge rifled slugs, .40S&W FMJ's, and .22LR. I got .300 Win Mag, .45ACP, and .22 CB's.

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
C'mon guys, what did you expect? Craig Boddington on the other side of the counter? Maybe a member of the USA shooting team?
This is wally world remember? |
RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
Well basically I think we can all do without that uninformed editorial I recieved :D Anybody loves good info...but when somebody is that far out and wants to argue.....well...lol.Their job is to sell...not argue with the customers..lmao. I figured you guys would get a good laugh out of that.

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
Oh I know, I know.
I sent the wife(The blind leading the Blind)in there last hunting season for shells for a pheasnat hunt(12 ga #5 2-3/4 inch),guess what I got 20 ga 3 inch #4's.(I even wrote it on paper) The clerk told my wife "Well thats what I use for Pheasants"she being the good soul bought those to suprise me and got the GOOD ones. I have mix upps in there plenty of times,if you don't know much about shellsand what you need DO NOT GO TO WALL-MARTS SPORTINGOODS COUNTER. BBJ PS:Anyone need a box of 20 ga shells? |
RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
Yes I shoot a 20 ,but I went in to buy a box of Rem 3" 4 Hevi shot for last years duck hunt for a freind and I ask if they had any .
DUMB f##k sits a 10 box case on the counter and charges me for a box . Puts the case in a bag and staples the receite to it . I smiled all the way home I shot HS for ducks for a few days Johnch |
RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
:D Doe Dumper I can't believe your picking on those knowledgeable clerks at Wally WOrld. They are a fountain of knowledge when it comes to firearms and anything related to hunting. They wear khaki vests at my store adorned with all kinds of buttons so they must know everything. You must have been mistaken.

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
Sounds about as bad as the Col. Cooper parrots who not only insist that a bolt action have iron sights, but that the scope be mounted in front of the receiver 'scout' style. Talk about a horse designed by commitee.

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
yeah the people they have working in the gun part of my local store definately aren't the brightest crayons in the box. ;). i went in one time looking for a box of cartridges for my .44 mag. she was looking in the shotgun part even after i told her where to look and pointed them out. then i overheard her tell someone that she was filling in for someone, that she usually worked in the fabric department.[&:]. you would think they might hire someone that might have the slightest idea about what they are trying to sell. but hey .... i guess that makes too much sense.

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
I would rather leave my sights on and would go with higher rings and mounts to do so. However in 48 years or so of hunting, I have never had a scope fail me on a hunt. I have had to remove my sights when I needed to mount a scope Now and didn't have higher rings at the time. I know many remove the sights just because they like the looks of the rifle better without the sights sticking up. I like to have the sights just in case I would need them but thats a matter of opinion and its not because I am afraid my scope might fail me.
Like they say though, this months gun expert at Walmart may have been last months shoe expert.:D |

Our local Walmart gun guy is pretty good.

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
It realy aint their fault, for some it is not their bowl of cheerios.
I know what they are going through. When I graduatted high school,I went to working construction, well I got laid off come fall and I needed a job so I applied at Mongomery Wards, and they put me in the paint department, now I know colors like red, blue, black, white and so on.Now come to mixing paint to be some color I sucked, ruined many a gallon of paint,so they put me in Drapperies and curtains, now I was realy lost. But you ask me what was the best place to fish on the Missouri,or where the goose hunting was hot,or what's the best bullet weight for a 30-06 when you are going elk hunting.I could have spit those out with out even thinking. So it realy not their fault, they are just getting a pay check like everyone else. But some brains about it would be nice. BBJ |
RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
When I bought my NEF at Walmart, I had to order it, so the sporting goods manager helped me out. He was a competitive skeet/trap shooter. Even so, he knew very little about rifles -- but at least he didn't pretend to know. He admitted he didn't know a lot and worked with me on the whole process.
|
RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
The man at the Wal-Mart I go to, has been there for over
10yrs. He gives me better answers than the guy at the gun shop. He will even do special orders for you and go out of his way to help you. |
RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
Precisely the reason I reload my own rifle and pistol ammo, and buy my shotgun ammo, firearms, and shooting suppliesfrom LOCAL gun stores/gun smiths.
|
RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
Our Walmart gun guy will order anything that he can get for us. They can get almost everything. He does not however know much of anything about guns except for what they sell the most of. The good thing about him is that he does not pretrnd to be an expert and often grills me about guns when I go in there. They must not really try to train their employees in the departments they work in except for how to sell the product and fill out the papers. And of course, Call a Manager.;)

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
I don't doubt there's some knowledgeable people who work at Walmart stores, but so far I've never met one.I absolutely hate shopping there, so for the most part, I avoid it. It's just not my kind of place.

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
Wally world can really find some dandies to work there!! Thats why they get the big bucks for working there. They have so much kknowledge, they really amaze me. They read and believe too many of these sports writers!! Yah put see through mounts on a 50mm scope, then one would have to have a neck like a girafe to see through the scope. I would have done the same you did. vangunsmith

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
I see a handful of folks who have found the "needle in the haystack" and gotten hooked up with a halfway clued in type at Wallyworld. For the far majority I see the other end of the spectrum, some pimple faced kid with cotton candy in his braces or some laid off factory worker who has been punching widgets out for the last 20yrs and now has to work at the very store that probably put them out of work to begin with.
As for those who make fun of the people at Wallyworld, newsflash: THE JOKES ON YOU!!! The very fact that you would admit to shopping there if you so hate the "help" or expect anything more than what you pay for (service is in direct proportion to what you pay for) speaks volumes of your "sensibilities". Another misnomer, there NEVER HAS BEEN, nor will there EVER BE a "salesperson" at ANY big box discounter. They don't hire quality, adept salespeople because such people don't have to work for such wages and hours. Quality salesmanship is in MUCH higher demand than simply "hiring on" at Wallyworld. The folks in the blue vests, while probably good people and might actually try and help you from time too time, are NOT sales people. They are simply traffic directors and stock retrievers. If you want a gun at the cheapest price, then Wallyworld will have your product. IF however you would actually like some help or information or might actually like some sort of work done on the gun in the future (be it custom or warranty) then by all means check with your local proshop FIRST! And I know, there ARE some real arrogant, a-holes hiding behind the counters in some pro-shops. BUT they quickly are going the way of the dinosaur. The competition that is todays business sector mandates service with a smile. The old "lean back and tell you want you need" kind will be gone by decades end, as most are already on their way out now if not already. The good ones are like anything else, there for the longhaul... Thank you drive thru, ;) RA |

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
Yeah, the walmart people dont know anything.I asked one guy if they had any s&w500 in stock. He said, "Whoa, you have a 50 cal? Thats huge! But sorry,we dont have any ammo for assault weapons.......just normal guns." What a bloomin idiot. And he was standing right infront of several boxes of 223rem, and 7.62x39mm. A 5 shot assault weapon huh?

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
It's not just WalMart that has this problem, you can also find a idiot working at any Sportsman Warehouse during the day. I do like to shop at Sportsman's but I know what I want and don't ask for much help. I have taughtseveral employees in my archery education class that werenew to bowhunting.Mostwere very nice down to earth people and we are now friends. But afew had theadditude that they were onlyin my class because the IDF&Grequired it. And there was nothing that I or anyone could teach them about archery or hunting, because they worked at sportsmans and they knew it all about hunting.

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
No matter what forum i o one, there's plenty of posts complaining about the big box stores and walmart. Funny that with everyone complaining, there must still be folks going to these businesses. Same forums have people complaining about high prices at thier local gun shops, well geee, if their customers are doing thier buying at walmart to save a few bucks, then yeah, the local guy is gonna have to make that up somewhere. I'll gladly pay the extra at the LGS to get personal knowledgeable service and know that if a problem arose, I can more than likely get it taken care of there. i know if I need a particular item, he can proberly find it for me thorugh his channels. I know he's in it for business to have an income but also becaue it's an area he enjoys and not just a place to work for a simple paycheck. Ya go to the Marts to sace a few bucks and get crappy service, got no sypathy for ya. Just like buying a particualr firearm, you get what ya pay for with service as well. Take care of the small LGS guys nad they';ll in turn take care of you - at least the good ones will.

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
I'll never use see through sights because they are UGLY! PERIOD!
|
RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
Like I said before, I never rely on a clerk at any store, to do my research for me. When I walk in to make a major purchase, or even a minor one, I've done my homework first. Got burned too many times when I was younger.[:@] Yeah, I'll still go to the Wally World, but I know what I wantand how much it should cost before I walk in. By the way, Wally World doesn't always have the best prices, so don't assume that when you walk in.

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
The local walmart near me has a bunch ofidiot/mean hunters/shooters...lol really...i went there with my friend one time when we were younger looking at all the different types of shooting accessories...not touching...looking...the guy at the counter came up to us...He said you two are not old enought to be into this stuff...i was polite and didn't say anything...i was like omg...i wasn't touching...then one time i was going to buy .22lr with my parents there...the guy again couldn't find it and i gave him specific directions were it was...i could see it and i didn't have my glasses...after that i said .22lr and he handed me a box of .22 mag...i was like umm i need .22lr sorry...and then i wanted .223 another time and the lady kept handing us the box of .22-250 and i was like umm im soryr but i need .223 and she was like oh...im sorry here...and she wasn't friendly about it...downright rood...but off the topic of shooting...my parents were buying me a paintball barrel...they were in a different part of the store, and i was scoping out which one i wanted and i was holding it and a lady came up to me and said im sorry sir...you need to be 18 to buy that...i was like umm thats okay cuz my parents are going to buy it...i mean i could see if it was ammo or a firearm or something dangerious or harmful...but what are you going to do with a paintball barrel?...just the barrel?...use it is a blowgun?!?...i mean come one...some people just need common sense...i mean i know what i could and could not purchase legally and i wasn't trying to break the law, but i mean a paintball barrel by itself is harmless...but thats just my 2 cents...

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
The walmart near me doesn't carry much hunting supplies and for a while wouldn't bring what few guns they have out of the back room. I asked the woman behind the counter where were the guns and she gave me a smart ass answer that if you want a partictular one we will go get it for you to look at.

RE: Ignorance was bliss at the Wal-Mart last night...
I use Gander Mountain, They tend to have people who know what they are doing and reasonable prices. I got my Springfield XD at $100 below list there, so I'm happy.
