gun rests
How do you make an inexpensive rest to hold your rifle steady while truing in your scope. And how do you position it on your rifle? If sand bags, how many and where and do you place them? THanks so much for your help!

RE: gun rests
What do you mean by "truing your scope"?? Are you talking about a rest to fire from when zeroing, or are you talking about some arrangement to hold the gun steady while installing and orienting the scope? If you are talking about shooting, I use one sandbag laid on the shooting bench under the forend of the rifle.

RE: gun rests
Sand bags are cheap and work well. I cut the leg out of old jeans or coveralls for the fore arm. At the butt I place an old wool sock with sand, just to keep the rifle steady. I found with this way, I can built up or down to make it work for all benchs. I don't fill them right up, leave room to dent and adjust for different stock types. I use play sand, you can get it at any hardware or homebuilder place...seems to be a little finer than actual sand bag..sand...does that sound right? Any ways just me, a liitle finicky!!! Can use cable ties on the ends to keep the sand in!

i usually take a big ziploc bag and fill it up with sand at the pits in maine.

RE: gun rests
I'm too cheap to buy a fancy vice, so I use home-made sandbags. I use a large one for the forend and a small one for the butt.

What does this mean " so are we?" |
RE: gun rests
oobuckshot, you asked for gun rests ideas that are cheap...no?
We all said sand bags, etc...right? Then you post for zeroing the scope. I was stating this what we use the sandbags for too - zeroing and sight in! Are you wanting something to attach scopes or work on the gun, not use at the range? I think we all thought your looking for a range, bench top aid, to help the gun be steady and zero in! |
