I own a .22-250 AI and have built a number of .22-6MM's. I consider the .22-250 AI to be the best balanced of the big cased .22 centerfires. You can make 4K with a 55 grain Ballistic Tip. If you back it off about two grains, you can get 20 reloads out of a case without ever having to trim it. The .220 Swift is not a good case design to try to load above the regular .22-250 Rem ballistics - long sloping case has to be trimmed every shot and need to be thrown away after four firings.

The .22-6MM is the one if you want to build a fast twist .22 CF and shoot VLD type bullets. I can get a 75 grain A-Max going at 3750 with wonderful accuracy. Great round for light big game or very long range varmint hunting. Taking this round up to the Ackely Improved profile is too much of a good thing for most bullets - they start coming apart in the barrel and barrel life really takes a nose dive.

What I heard was that it is physically impossible to get a gun (any gun) to shoot more than 4000+ fps. is this true. that only the military has been able to do this with cannons on ships that are specially designed. Other than that, thers no gun, rifle or anything that can reach say 4500 fps. is this true ?

Note,VEL does not mean accuracy. Its like mixing apples and oranges. But if you want a barn burner, fastest yet to my knowledge,is the 22-284. It vel. is 6585fps. According to the ballistics table in P.O. Ackeys books!! have fun with what ever cartridge you choose. vangunsmith

I don't know what the upper limit is on velocity - have gotten 4359 out of a 6MM-284 with a 55 grain ballistic tip. To my surprise, this load shot 3/8" at 100 yards out of a 1:10 twist gun. I also used to own a .22-284 (barrel life was short). I got 4500 plus out of it. Not many bullets could stand up to that speed. The older Nosler solid base and the current Nosler ballistic tip were two that would. One of my customers got some component CF sabots, like the ones Remington uses for their accelerator loads. They were .308 for use with .224 bullets. He played around with his .30-378 Weatherby using a 55 grain Nosler ballistic tip, and was able to "peg" his chronograph at 4999 fps.

I'm kinda going out a limb here, but I understand that there is an upper limit on velocity based on the rate of expanding gasses in a rifle barrel. I don't think it is over 6,000 fps. I also understand our military has experimented with "guns" that use a sequence of collapsing electromagnetic fields - have gotten velocities of up to 10K. At this speed, a projectile (which is usually a hardened steel billet) can escape the atmosphere and continue to infinity at this blinding speed. Hope it doesn't hit anything important along the way . . . .

Not bad, that's some serious speed.

I recall reading somewhere that rifle powder gases expand at around 5,200 fps, so in theory you could get a bullet to move that fast but you would need a constant maximum pressure and enough barrel to get the bullet to move as fast as the expanding gases. the only thing is you have many variables working against you from attaining that velocity.
