RE: Deer pistol
Just make sure to check regs on pistol calibers. This is what the IDNR has to say.
The only legal ammunition for a
centerfire handgun is a bottleneck centerfire
cartridge of .30 caliber or larger with a case
length not exceeding 1.4 inches, or a straightwalled
centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or
larger, both of which must be available with
the published ballistic tables of the manufacturer
showing a capability of at least 500 foot
pounds of energy at the muzzle.

RE: Deer pistol
If your regulations allow a rifle cart. I would go with a Savage Striker in 7-08 or a Encore in 7-08 .
If you are limited to straight wall rounds ( like OHIO ) I would choose a Ruger Super Redhawlk in 454.
Remember the ear plugs !!!!!!!!!! Any of the good deer guns/rounds bark LOUD.
Best of luck , PRACTICE ,Practice and more practice

RE: Deer pistol
I've been using a Ruger Super Blackhawk for the last 6-7yrs for deer...Satin Stainless 7.5" bbl in .44mag. With open sights I can make vital hits out to 125yrds confidently, but I also shootmy revolversmore than the average hunter.
The Redhawk or Super Redhawk (double action counterpart to the Super Blackhawk) is also a good choice, however, it's more expensive, and in hunting scenarios, you'll only be shooting in Single action mode anyway, so why pay for the double action when all you need is a single action? If you're deer hunting in bear country, that's a different story of course.

I have a Ruger Redhawk in 41 Magnum. The price was right and while I was looking for a 44 at the time, I don't have any regrets. You can shoot semi-wadcutter 210 gr with a minimum of recoil and then switch to CorBon 250 Casts for hunting and it will outperform a factory loaded 44 Mag.. Just my 2 cents.
