with factory ammo it pushes a 70 gr to 3400+ and 55 gr'ers to 3900+ fps.
Whats your point?
I say its a deer rifle, a good one at that, you say its a varmint gun. Its both with the right ammo. Its the minnimum cartridge for elk and moose, pretty good for a so called "varmint gun"

I like owning all the calibers so I don't mind loading for all of them. I have found that the 100 grain bullet performs best for deer in the 25-06. I use the 140 in the 6.5 most of the time although the 120 would work well too. I would shoot nothing lighter that the 130 in the 270. I have used the 120 in the 7mm's.(280 & 7MM-08), I use the 150 in the 308's. I like a SD of about 210-215 for deer. Thats one reason I reload. Tailoring the load to the critter based on whats worked best for me on our size of deer. For Elk I would up the bullet weight another notch or two. The 6.5 seems to work very well with the 140 for everything. I have used the 160 RN for Bears.

I am sure that the 129 grain would be a very good all around bullet for the 6.5. The first load I ever tried was the 140 grain Hornady. I went to the range and shot a five shot group of 5/8 of an inch and called it good. Thats been my load every since. Many years of one shot kills on a wide variety of big game has kept me using it.Only the 308 has matched its performance on deer and bigger game for me. I could use those two calibers for everything. Or either one as well.

A bigger bore with a lighter bullet will not have the performance of a .243 using the same grain bullet. the shape of the bullet throws it off.
heres a comparo..........SD.................BC
.243 100 gr.................242...............430
.257 100gr.................216................333
7mm 100 gr................177...............215
277 110 gr..................205..............318
.308 110gr.................166................154
Note none of those calibers have what some claim to be the required sectional density for penetration on big game. except for the .243
companied by the low coefficiency you'll have a bullet dropping much faster and drifting more also.
Note :
The .243 rocks !
No wait
It Rules!
no it Rocks and rules !
yea thats it.

Popeye- It's obvious that 95+% of everything he says is BS. He bends and manipulates numbers to support whatever theory he is trying to prove at time.
kinda like a democrat lol, I wonder if he is a democrat??

The above chart only works when you use the best bullet for the 243 and the worst bullet for the others for the stats listed. You forgot to mention that the 120 grain 25 cal spitzer gives 260 SD and 446 BC. The 6.5 gives 140 gr Sp 287 SD and 490 BC. The 270 140 gr bullet 261 SD and 461 BC. The 7MM 160 gr Bullet, SD 283 and BC 475. 308, 180 gr bullet SD271 and BC 476.
When you pick the stronger bullets for every caliber then the 243 is nothing special. It does well for its size but don't kid yourself or others that there it is any magic pill. A bullet of equal SD will perform much the same regardless of caliber. Pick bullets of equal SD to compare. The limit on the 243 is the fact that the 100 grain is as good as it gets and the other calibers take over where it leaves off and continue to improve on performance. The 243 has its strong and weak points like every caliber made. It gives lower recoil at the cost of limited bullet weight and ME just as the 300 Mag gives high ME and bullet weight at the cost of much more recoil. I am sure that almost everyone else here understands all of this.
