New re-designed Simmons and Redfield scopes
I am real curious to see how well these scopes perform. I will probably look real serious at a Redfield whenever they make it to the dealer that is. I will not buy the Simmons ..they are entirely made in China and I don't want any part of that scene. The Redfields will be made in the US and some foreign assemblies will be used as well. No different then Leupold or Burris in that respect.

RE: New re-designed Simmons and Redfield scopes
I have heard of the redfield scopes, in the past, how have they stacked up? I had a simmons for my first scope, the relief was too short, smacked me in the eye. I am looking for a new scope for the .243 I just got last night. Any advice? EJ

RE: New re-designed Simmons and Redfield scopes
I haven't seen the new Simmons scopes, but one nice side-effect is that places are starting toclose out the old scopes. The Bass Pro Shop in Dallas (and elsewhere, I presume) has Simmons 44 Mag 3-9x44 scopes for $80, which is about half price.
These scopes are made in the Phillipines, not China., and have a reputation for being pretty good. They've also got some AETEC scopes on sale. You might want to have a look... |
RE: New re-designed Simmons and Redfield scopes
Regardless of where they are made, the present Aetecs are the best bargin out there. The new ones (Aetec) won't have the 5 inches of eye relief. I have an old Redfield 30-35 years old. 2x7 Tracker. Its been the best scope I ever owned, bar none. Its been on rifles from my 222 to my 416 Rem Mag Ruger No. One. Its never blinked so far. Its now on my 308 Browning A Bolt.
Another lower priced scope than done well for me are the Swift. Both the Premier and the lower priced one(about 100.00 for a 3x9x40). I have one on my 280 (3x9) and the Prmier 4x12 on my other 308. |

i don't know about the new redfields but the old ones are really good. my dad has a 3-9 that's been on his '06 for upwards of 30 years. i liked the one on his so much that i bought one almost just like it to put on my '06.

RE: New re-designed Simmons and Redfield scopes
Awhile back I picked up a used (new production) Redfield 3x9 scope which I haven't mounted yet..It looks fairly decent.Redfield and Simmons will have to make allot of improvments to get anywhere near the quality of the original Redfield's.Some of mine are over 30 years old and still as good as the day I bought them.I hope Redfield can come back to being a quality scope likethey were years ago before going belly up.Time will tell.

RE: New re-designed Simmons and Redfield scopes
Redfield, Simmons, and Weaver have all been bought by the Meade company (telescopes). They are all manufactured under the same parent company now and will all have very similar qualities about them.
I'm sure that Meade being in control the new scopes will be of very good quality. I noticed that the Simmons master series of scopes have been made with machined one piece tubes and a lot less parts than before. A huge improvement right there. |
RE: New re-designed Simmons and Redfield scopes
I have both Weaver and Simmons scopes. They are both good scopes for the price and I’m looking forward in purchasing another Weaver Grand Slam scope. The Weaver doesn’t have the most eye relief but for a low recoil rifle it’s perfect.

RE: New re-designed Simmons and Redfield scopes
I will prefer ironsights before buying any of this two scopes.
Simmons are cheaply made, have poor eye relief and virtually no quality......bottomline....crap! On the other hand Redfield haven't made a decent scope in decades. I don't think they're gonna start doing them now....... |
RE: New re-designed Simmons and Redfield scopes
I have had some of the Aetecs for quite a few years. Simmons makes some cheap scopes and some very good scopes. A little research will show this to be true. The Aetec has very good reviews over a number of years and has more eye reliefe that anything else out there with 5 inches of non critical eye relief. I have used them hard and have yet to see a problem ONE.
The new ones will have less eye relief and will have eye relief simular to the Leupolds. I will try a new one before I recommend or condem them, unlike many on this forum.[:@] |

Boy oh boy aren't you a wealth of knowledge. CurrentSimmons scopes excluding the redesign are better then most scopes out there. I haven't heard too many complaints about Aetecs for example. The new redesign is a very nice scope at least on paper. I will look at one seriously butI just won't buy it because its made in China and that is the only reason. On the other hand Redfield haven't made a decent scope in decades. I don't think they're gonna start doing them now....... Redfield has been out of business for a couple of years in case you didn't know. The new redfields look terrific on paper. I will look them over real carefully when dealers start stocking them. They are not going to be cheap either in Quality or Price. |
RE: New re-designed Simmons and Redfield scopes
Had nothing but bad experiences with Simmons I ran away fron them before the Aetecs were on the market and personally I don't care if the're good or bad now, the're Simmons!!!![:'(]
As for Redfield's, they use to begood until the mid 80's, after that all they made was affordable but not 100% dependable they oftenly got foggy or the zero moved easily. Getting a good one was really a lucky shot. Oldie, If you want something made in the USA buy a Zeiss Conquest (at least is assembled in the USA!) |

RE: New re-designed Simmons and Redfield scopes
I found an article about these scopes in SHOOTING TIMES this month.........
Simmons line of scopes will now be made in China BUT, in a brand new facility built by Americans specifically for the production of Simmons scopes, managed by Americans, and owned by Americans. The Redfield scopes will be assembles in the States at Meades manufacturing facility and will include components made in the US as well as in its China Operation. The NEW Redfield scopes will have a 5X magnification range. Which means that a typical 3-9X scope has a 3X magnification range. Redfields variable will be a 3-15x52 scope and will also feature a constant eye relief of 4 inches. Another very nice feature of both lines will be a 100% one piece tube construction. This not only includes the main tube and objective end typical of all other one piece tubes but also the eyepiece as well all the way to the rubber eye guard. For anyone interested in these new scopes the article is definetly worth reading. |
