270 beat me up bad.........
I have always considered the .270 Winchester to be mild in the recoil department. I was out at the range on Monday with some loads I worked up over the weekend. I only shot 10 rounds of this load. By the time I drove back to work( I went on my lunch hour) my shoulder was swollen to about twice the size of the other, and I could hardly lift my arm over my head. I don't haave any idea of what happened to do that kind of damage to my shoulder(you should see it now) it's bruised in 2 different spots and is yellow ,purple and a few other colors. Nasty!!
Anyway I have shot this rifle a couple hundred times before this and never had any discomfort at all, even after 30 round days. All I can think of is the load was too hot (no evidence of it on the brass at all) or I just plain held wrong and hit something just right to make it swell up. Kinda weird!~ By the way the load was 54 grains IMR 4350 with a 130 grain Hornady interlock bullet. Don't worry I won't develop a flinch, I love that rifle. SUPPORT YOUR SPORT JOIN THE NRA |

Actually Quilly I would, I'm not afraid of recoil, I just can't figure out what happened. I'd like to get a 450 Marlin when I can afford a new rifle.

Sounds like you had the rifle out of the pocket and not against your shoulder tight enough. I shoot a 300 Win Mag and it never bruised me. What kind of buttplate do you have on it?

the rifle has 1/2 inch rubber pad on it. The way she came from the factory.

Well that load should only generate about 17ft/lbs of recoil. Try putting on a good recoil pad and hold onto the thing next time.:)

Wow that is odd. My 300RUM don't leave my shoulder bruised after 40 rounds. Not being a smartass, are you taking any new medicines? I have seen where some blood thinners can cause undue bruising. Only reason I ask, is that load ain't that bad. Not like pushing out with H1000. And that ain't that bad out of a 270 with a rubber pad. Especially since you have fired it several times before. Who knows, maybe it was alot warmer outside than usual and you were sweating.
The only round I have that will bruise me is 12Ga 3" slug. 20 rounds of that I am ready for some ice. |
