I would narrow it down to 338 and pick from 340 Weatherby, 338 Win mag, or 338-06.

.338 should cover his choices.

I am different here. I owned two 338 Win Mags. I was never less impressed by any other caliber that I ever owned. It seemed to do nothing that the 300 Mags wouldn't do. I would, without a seconds hesitation skip over the 338 to the 375 H&H.

Since he DID say "Big Bears".....

I agree with JamesB (gasp) on the mention/recommendation of a 375 H&H.
** Low recoil yetlots of power,
** Lots of frontal area yet good penetration,
** Big heavy bullets yet good reach....

Simply Heart Warming.

Why would you want another .30 cal . I would keep my .06 and use it for everything except BIG BEARS then I would use a 45/70 lever action. Very potent round for bears.

a 300 mag of some sort sounds like the ticket for your buddy, maybe a 338 or 8mm rem mag. When he goes after the elk and bears use the premium bullets religiously. His 06 would work also if he uses premium bullets.

Double Gasp even.:DI really like the 375 H&H. I passed up a CZ in 375 H&H for 350.00 at a pawn shop a while back. I went back later but it was gone. The recoil is not much more if any than the 8 lb Buffalo Classic 45-70 with 500 grain bullets.

Bust the bank account and get the Lazzeroni Meteor.

If the guy is not afraid of recoil and shoots well I would say 300 RUM,338 Win mag,.338 RUM.
I have owned rifles from 7mm RM to 416 RM,if you wan't a gun that has minimal hold over pick the 300 RUM.
You can still get there with 06,there is no dust on it or the 7mm RM.
The 300 WSM,325 WSM,300 Winnie,300 WBY,340 WBY,300 RSUM all will handle bears with good 180-200 gr bullets.
I hunt almost always with 338 win mag (210 Noslers)sighted in @ 2.5 inches high at a 100,I'm 4 low at 300 and 18 at 400.If I aim top back on a elk out to 450 I'm still in the boiler room.It don't matter if I'm shooting a 300 WSM or a 300 RUM,its still the same hold.
Best of luck
BBJ
