RE: 300WM Vs 300WSM
Should I consider another cartridge? A friend is trying sway me towards a 7mm mag.
Here is what I intend to do with it. Primarily deer hunt in Michigan and Tennessee. The shots in Tennesse will be very long. Some out to 400 yards or more. The shots in Michigan will be in the 100 to 150 range. I also want a cartridge that will take elk efficiently out to 300 yards.
Does this shed any light on the direction I should be going?
Thanks
Tom
P.S. I changed my mind on the .45-70 Marlin Guide gun and I am getting another bolt action rifle. This is why I am on this mission.

I would never pick the 7 MM Mag over either of the 300 Mags. Anything the 7mm will do the 300 will do better. The same can't be said in reverse. The 300 is just more gun no matter how you look at it. The recoil won't be enough more with the 300 WSM to hardly notice.

RE: 300WM Vs 300WSM
I was considering a 7mm WSM, I decided to go with the 300 WSM because it was faster and had a larger bullet variety. The 300 WSM can push a 150gr bullet about 3300 fps which will kill a deer at 400 yards if you are capable of shooting that well. You could also use a 165gr bullet or a 180gr bullet for elk or even a 200gr or 220gr bullet for moose. The 7mm is an excellent bullet but the 30s are just more versital. I am happy I went with the 300 WSM.

RE: 300WM Vs 300WSM
Don't forget, that if you do reload, that the 300WMbrass will not chamber easily after 2 or 3 firings as the die will not be able to size the area just in front of the belt (I had 4 300WM's over the years, now have a 300WSM). That's why they (I can't remember who) market a $90 finger die to correct this (for all regular belted cases).
