building a back stop for my shotgun
 

Now that I have been doing clays I would like to work on siting in my barrel for the slugs. I know I need some kind of back stop. I have plenty of dirt around my place that I can use that is very clean. I am just wondering what is the best dirt to use (sant, top soil, clay, ext) and how deap should I make it. I do not know how far a slug can go into a backstop.

I would go with topsoil, once it is packed the bullet wont go any deeper than an inch or 2. I use to shoot a 7mm,270,and a 243 at a dirt mound and we found almost every bullet just inches into the dirt. I would make the mound pretty big or construct a 8ft wide by 5 ft high by 3ft deep or back and fill it with dirt. This will do the trick.

We used sand on ours. But that is because we had a lot left over. It works great. The slugs will only penetrate 1-2" into it. Ours is aprox. 5' high 8' wide and 6' thick. I just piled it with a skid steer. Good luck

we made a back stop on our shooting range a few years ago. we just took the rototiller, went up to the top of the shooting range, and started digging. we took the loose dirt, and piled it in back of the "shooting pit". this pit makes a nice place to rest targets, and it is safe. we took the top 6 inches off in the back, and the top inch or so off in the front. we also dug up the neighbor guys field, and picked some more up. overall, our back stop was about 5 feet high, and about 3 feet thick. that will stop a slug any day.
