In defense of Big Green, this situation is extremely rare. Even rarer on a gun that has never been tweaked for a better trigger pull. But possible. That's why the "never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy" rule of gun safety was developed.

The only completely stock guns I have personally run across that would do this had been sprayed with WD-40 at one time- into the trigger mechanism.

Roskoe, gun was brand new couldn't have been more then a month old. I was actually walking back to the car and attempting to unload the gun (pointed up) The second I flicked that safety off Kaboom. Back then I didn't have enough sense to take a gun apart when purchased and remove all the residual oils and gunk that may have been on the mechanism.

You are right. As you know I have had about 25 700 Remingtons and sold in my shop another 100 or so. I have never had one fire when operating the safty. As far as I know, None I ever sold had a problem either. At least it never got back to me if it did. My problems with Remington add up to a grand total of two. I had the bolt handle come off of two 788 Remingtons . One in 308 and one in 6mm Rem. Darn I quess I got all the good ones.;) Oh I quess the folks on the poll here must have gotten a few as well.:D

Last year I bought two brand new Remington 700s. Th triggers are both pretty stiff, but they are also very crisp. I was going to adjust them myself, having found instructions on the internet. I reconsidered after reading the part about slamming the bolt home several times to make sure the safety holds. The Remington trigger is not my favorite (the Winchester is) but I have learned to shoot it reasonably well as it comes from the factory. The triggers on both rifles seemed to wear in after a couple of hundred rounds, also.

If there were two things I would change about the Remingtons, it would be to change to a safety that actually blocks the firing pin, and make the extractor larger and more robust.

No rifle is perfect, but the 700 is still one of my favorites.

You should do that regardless of what trigger you are adjusting or how much you paid for it. This is simply to make absolutely sure that you have not lightened the trigger too much and allow the sear and trigger to bounce off each other and fire the gun. Do this with the safety in the on and off position.

You should also cock the gun and with the safety off bounce the butt of the rifle against the floor several times assuring that a stiff jolt will not fire the gun. Empty chamber of course!!!!!!!!


Ruger and Winchester are the only two production rifles I know of that actually pull the firing pin away from the sear when the safety is in the on position. Weatherby, Remington, Browning, Savage, Steyr, etc... they all use safeties that simply block the movement of the trigger.

OEH - can you get the gun to duplicate the problem (without a round in the chamber, of course) ? My wife's uncle had this happen with his .264 Win. BDL about 15 years ago. I could never get it to let go in the shop. I still wonder if he didn't bump it with his finger inadvertently. I know it is possible for a Remington to fire when you push the safety off, though; from what I have read. But I have had maybe a thousand or more through my shop in 30 years. Never actually seen it in person.

LOL Call me Little James cause Im troublefree also....but I am not quite up to 10 yet. All my triggers have been set waaaaay down also. :D The 7mm-08 came out at just a hair under 3 pounds after changing spring. The rest are around 3.5

Doe Dumper. The Remington Gods don't like some of these guys. Other than those two bolt handles comming off the 788's, I have had to troubles at all. Accuracy has been the strong point. I expect and always get fine accuracy from them. I had a 22-250 in the 700 Synthetic that wouldn't group with the 60 grain bullets but shot very well with 55 or lighter bullets. I didn't keep that one long because I wanted to shoot 60's in it. It wouldn't group them under 2 inches. Thats was the poorest shooting one that I ever owned.
