Big critter. I like the 7mm mag's but if I was going to buy something just for Elk, I would look for a larger wound channel. 35 Whelen, maybe 338 Win.

One of the board members was going to take out a 416 Rigby. I wonder how well that worked.

.300WinMag is the choice of many, but then again there are calibers that
will also do the job.

The .270 is popular here in Idaho - that or anything bigger that you can shoot well will work. Shot placement is important.

The 7mm remington mag is a fine choice for elk for the distances given.

Some years ago, when I was into Elk hunting...I bought a Browning A-bolt....in 7mm Mag...specifically as my "Elk rifle". It never let me down. The ranges at which I took my (3) Elk were a minimum of about 135 metres....and a maximum of 229 metres. The 7mm Mag. is a fine choice for Elk. Just as with any hunting rifle, though, be sure to use high-quality bullets. (I always used 160 gr. Nosler Partitions... they worked well for me.)

Most any .308 is very good. I do animal retraval a lot on elk. The better rounds seem to be 3006 , 300 win or 300 wby.If you just want a elk gun the 340 wby is very very good round.

You can kill a elk with a 223 but it is not the best round.

The 7mmRem.Mag. is a very good elk cartridge. Stick with the premium ammo or better bullets to load such as Nosler Part., Trophy Bondeds, Core-Lokt Ultras.

Most long time hunters and experts agree that anything from the 270 on up is good for elk. The 30-06 is certainly up to the task and many have been taken with the 270. If I were just getting started and was not bothered by recoil, I would buy a new 300 WSM. If I had a 30-06 or 270-280 I would just use those.
