What is the Difference between a short mag., an ultra mag.short action ultra mag and a regular mag. like 4 example. a 300 winmag, a 300wsm, a 300 ultra mag, and a 300 short action ultra mag.

The "real" difference between them is, they all shoot the same weight bullet at different velocities.

The fastest one has the most power and drops the least. BUT, it also burns the most powder and has the most recoil too.

Well, one is ultra fast and the one alot short of ultra fast but pretty fast.:D

300RUM shoots 180gr bullet around 3200fps or faster and uses around 90-100gr of powder
300WSM shoots 180gr bullet around 3000fps or faster and uses around 65gr of powder
300RUSM shoots 180gr bullet a little less than the WSM with tad less powder
300Win mag is a long action like the RUM but shoot 180gr around 3050fps or faster. Uses around 80gr of powder.

so......as you can see per Bigcountry's numbers there aint much difference, about 200 fps from the bottom to the top. BUT, alot of guys are always looking for something new or different. I shoot a 300 RUM, because I didnt want a 300 winny because all my friends had one. I like to be different, and when I heard Savage had a few of them still in inventory of Left hand I just had to have one. Honestly, I could have probably gotten close to the same results with the 300 winny, but I didnt want one. I think the 300 RUM's are kinda starting to get a "cult" following.....dont know why

Oh yea, how many you burned out?:D

I did burn out a barrel actually. After 1000 rounds I had heat cracks all in the throat.

I would suggest that you buy the newest reloading manual that you can find. That will answer about all you would ever want to know about all cartridges. Also a new book Cartridges of the world. I should say an updated version of this book.

In the caliber you are talking about, there is not really enough difference to set one much above the other. Lets face it, a game animal would never know the difference. The most common is the 300 Win Mag. You will find ammo for them about anywhere. Its suitable for all North American Game. The 300 WSM is getting pretty widely used and ammo can be had a WalMart and all real gun stores and the shops like Cabelas and online at outfits such as Midway. The Remington Version 300 USM is not finding wide acceptance and In my mind will soon be obsolete. The 300 UM is pretty popular and is a bit less powerful than the 30-378 from Weatherby. The 300 Weatherby Mag is close to the same as the 300 UM.Out to 250 yards, the 30-06 will do the same jobs as the 300 Mags. It depends on what range you want to shoot. If I had to have a Magnum right now, My choice would be the 300 WSM. Its going to stay around and become more and more popular.
