410 shotgun
 

My dad has an old bolt action .410 bore shotgun. On the barrel it says "410 bore - 3in." Does that mean I can't shoot 2 1/2 shot shells out of it? I noticed on my other shotguns it list all the lenghts of shells you can use.

3030...I'm a 410 freak! I love the caliber, and own 5 different 410's. You can shoot 2 1/2" shells out of any 410 that has been made. Some won't handle the 3" shells, but yours luckily will handle both.

I wouldn't reccomend the 2 1/2" shells for hunting. They're fine for plinking. They don't do nearly as well a job on squirrels or rabbits as the 3".

Thanks Pro-line. I was just making sure. 410sare fun little guns, the only thing I don't like about them is the cost of shells. Other than that they are great.

I agree VERY strongly about using only 3" for hunting applications. The 2 1/2" shells are just too weak for hunting, you'll "jump" more rabbits than kill and wing more birds than drop, it's just not worth it. You shouldn't notice any problem shooting 2 1/2" in your 3" chamber. Maybe check out your chamber shoulder every now and again, to make sure you aren't catching anything on it and tearing it up, otherwise, I'm sure you'd be fine. Heck, good luck finding anything longer than 2 1/2" in slugs, so obviously they must not think it's going to hurt anything.

Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!!

BTW, what make is your shotgun? Most of the old .410 bolts I've seen that are still in good working order were Mossbergs or Mossy's under a different name, such as New Haven's, and from what yours is labeled, it sounds like a mossy. But, I've never found one just like mine, only single shots, while mine's three. Just a curious question, be nice to know if my old gal was a loner or not though.

It's an New Haven he got from Sears a long time ago. I think it is around 35 years old and in great condition.
