RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
Virgina 7. Thanks for the best wishes. When I first came up here Devils lake was about 55000 acres. Its now grown to 138000 acres. Minewuakin used to be 15 miles from the lake. Now the boat ramp is in their city park. The old county hiway shop is now under 20 feet of water and the roads have been built up so many times that its going to really look strange if the water ever goes back down. The walleye fishing is nothing short of fantastic. Not only in numbers but also in size. The pike fishing is just as good with 10 pounders so common that they don't raise an eyebrow. The white Bass go 3-41/2 lbs and the perch go 2 lbs or more. The down side is its flat around there and it doesn't take much wind to make you wish you were somewhere else.:D Its some place though.

RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
I think I will kick back, maybe heat up my .44 RSBH a bit. Gee; sounds like life is good in James's B's area!

RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
The 22 Savage High Power is essentially a 30-30 necked down to 22 cal, though using .228" bullets not the .224" we have today. It's been around longer than Waters has been alive;). As for a deer cartridge I have seen it take down a few in my time.
As for myself this weekend, I think I will try to clear a few more acres with my D-5 on the place, trying to find a future homesite life is good....doubleA |
RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
James, what are your thoughts on the water diversion having the water flow into the Red and into Manitoba?
|
RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
I am almost outta here at work... ;)
This weekend, I might try to take my old 17' trihull I/O speedboat out to the lake, but then, there's a big bass fishing tournament going on too. The lake will be mobbed with 900,000 boaters and people copping attitudes at the boat ramp. [:@] Then again, I might take the boat to another smaller place and go fishing. ....who knows. EVERYONE HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE HOLIDAY!!!! :D Butch A. |

RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
I hear that the diversion project is under way. I can't see the fuss myself as there shouldn't be anything comming up the Red that has not been cooing up there for years. However I am not a biologist and don't have all the info. I suspect that its mostly politics. I don't know how much they want to reduce the size of devils lake or if this is to just keep it from getting any bigger. The fight has been on for some time. The project itself is sort of a mute point now because the lake is going to run over and the water is going to the Red river regardless of what else is done. It will run into the shyenne and that runs into the Red. Its all mother nature at work now.:D I will know a lot more after I talk to my guide friend up there. He guides full time on Devils Lake.

RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
James, I live on the north side of the border in Winnipeg and really can’t see the fuss either. There really shouldn’t be any difference in water quality on either side of the border but like you said I’m not a biologist either. As long as the water is controlled in the spring during flooding season. They mentioned that the water would rise about 4” higher during normal season and that’s no big deal. Let me know what you find out. I’m curious to see what is said especially when the politicians doesn’t get involved.
They showed on the news the amount of water that has risen over the years and that’s unbelievable. Hopefully they can resolve the problem one way or another. Have a great weekend guys, we already had ours. |
RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
I will let you know what the story is after I talk to the guide. The same water quality should be present as all the rivers that run in would be the same. I quess Flooding might be a little more likely although there is seldom any floodind on the shyenne until it joins the other rivers in Fargo. Do you fish on the Red up there? I have wanted to fish the big cats up there sometime. We catch a ton of good channel cats north of Fargo but they get bigger as you go north. The locked in ones up your way really get big. I think they winter in lake Winnipeg don't they?
|
RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
I’ve never fished for cats my self but I’ve seen and heard of very large channel cats being caught in and around Selkirk and Lockport. These are two towns north of Winnipeg about 45 minutes to and hour away at the most that are along the side of the Red River. I would have to ask my brother on how big they get. He does allot more fishing then me. All I know is that they catch lots of master anglers and we have lots of Americans that come up fishing for these big channel cats.
I’m not sure where they winter because I do ice fishing on the Red north of Selkirk and have never caught a channel cat. We are always looking at getting green backs ( walleye) that come down from lake Winnipeg. Just south of Winnipeg we have a large wire screen fence that runs through the Red to make sure that the big ones don’t go south for the winter.LOL ![]() |
RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
So thats where all the big ones are??:D I love catching and eating channel cats. Or greenbacks.
Virgina 7. They say that if summer falls on a saturday we may have a picnic.:D |
RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
Flatheads,Blues,Dan River now...40# +.....NOW.The fish are running.
|
RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
All we have in the Red for cats are the Channel cats. Lots of them from 3 to 16 lbs. Lots and lots of 5-7 pounders.
|
RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
James My bud caught 4 last night 3 Flatheads and 1 Blue Total weight 4 fish=165 pounds not to bad.Flats 52#,39#,27# Blue 47#.Using Gold fish and brim about 8" long.Got my boat 98% dissasembled .New decks, carpet, seats, wiring.Picked a good time of year to do it ...LOL right in the middle of fishing season.Maybe it will keep Taz and Capt. Brad from falling through the decks.:D
|
RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
Hey, I did a first over the weekend. I caught a big bullfrog on a fly rod. Fishing for bass with my 9 wt and popping bug and put it right in front of him. Sucker ate it. Heck of a time getting him out of the reeds. Didn't see enough around to justify keeping him so I threw him back.
|
RE: HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
I once caught a snapping turtle fishing for perch. If it wouldn’t have been that the hook broke just by the boat I might have tried turtle soup.
James, the master angler for channel cat is 34” long. I’m not sure what that’s in weight but would think it’s probably 25 lbs plus and maybe more like 30lbs. I did once catch a master angle Northen Pike and had a heck of a time bringing it in. |
