460XVR

I was going to buy a revolver to hunt deer with and I saw an article on the S&W 460XVR and was wondering if anyone has shot one or heard any info on them. My father has a super red hawk in .44 mag and I thought it shot nice but I just wanted something different.

Scott, good choice. It has good reviews for 2005.

Great choice. I think I am going to have to get the 460 and the 500. I just need both as I am a revolver nut for hunting. Another one that is not on everyones hip is a Dan Wesson 445 supermag. Hence my handle. I love it. Smoking accurate strong revolver. Very sweet shooter and has the wow factor to it. Freedom arms is also always a great choice. Good luck but be warned that handgun hunting is addicting.

To me these guns are just to big and heavy. If I want that much weight and size I will just carry a rifle. Anything bigger than a 6 inch Model 29 size revolver is a hand connon and for that I would also pick the Encore with some better long range capability. 7mm-08 or such. I have a 5 inch 29 classic. Thats my idea of a hunting handgun. The plain RH is not to bad for size but the SRH is like packing a concrete block.

I have hunted WT deer with a 44 mag RedHawlk for 10+ years .
I have shot deer from 3 feet to 100 yds ( most are 30-50 yds) and never had one go more than 40 yds .
I don't feel I need to lug 20 oz more gun ( 73 vers 53 ) to the blind to do the same job ,only to have it mess up more meat.
True you will be able to shoot a deer farther out .
But MOST hunters don't practice enough due to being cheap , lazy , not having access to a range to use the extra range the 460 cart. has.
Some "hunters" will buy the gun to have the new toy or think the extra energy will be the silver bullet to make up for their lack of skill or practice.

Yes in the hands of a few it will be usefull but for most a 629 or Redhawlk is a better choice IMO.
Few years back I thought I needed a 454 Ruger Super RH , I down load it to hot 44 mag loads if I use it ( 250 gr XTP at 1450fps)

RH. Yes it brings back memories. I have packed a lot of blocks. I would rather pack a heavy gun though, If it came right down to it.:D I have packed my last block.
